Absolutely essential reading
The is an excellent book written by one of the best in the business. It's a moving but dispassionate account of what happened since Feb 24, 2022 -- at the geopolitical, military and human level. It's a fascinating insight into how very ordinary people were thrust into extraordinary circumstances, often making extremely brave choices and sacrifices. (But also sometimes not -- which I found just as interesting.) It's realistic about the ugliness and cruelty of war, but because it's written by a news reporter, isn't emotive. The wild thing is we are still living this tragic history and I think this is a great text for people who followed the war closely but want to understand everything better and put it in a cogent timeline, as well as those looking for an engaging primer.

Gripping 'on the ground' reporting on the first year of the Russia's invasion of Ukraine
Yaroslav tells the story of the first year of the war mainly through his own travels around Ukraine as a war correspondent - so we get details of what happened during the invasion as well as movement around the various front lines.I especially appreciated the stories that highlighted the complexities of relations between Ukraine and Russia, and how that has now been changed by atrocities like those at Bucha.
