Critical thinking enhancement
Well written and clear examples of what it means to be critical to texts as you read them. The chapters return to topics to elaborate on the different levels of thinking and how they evolve on parallel paths of thought. This helps to develop the stretch and depth in the line of questioning related to one sentence. It becomes clear that you can in fact write several pages of inference and criteria from a simple statement. This will help on future papers and my dissertation.

NOT zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I've read a lot of books on Critical Thinking, and have been reading Roy van den Brink-Budgen's books on Critical Thinking since they were first published. I've also attended quite a few workshops with him, and can attest to the fact that he's a genuinely inspirational fellow. His books are clear and concise, and when I was looking for books on the subject over ten years ago there was very little to choose from (unlike now), but his books have consistently remained a great place to begin exploring Critical Thinking. The fact that the previous reviewer 'Chickster' appears to be a teacher is very concerning, given his/her lack of ability to use the English language properly, and I suggest that his/her problem resides not with this book, but with his/her own cognitive abilities!PS. I know that I'm resorting to arguing ad hominem, but it's thanks to Roy that I know this!!!

Excellent
This book is important in many ways. Unlike so many books on Critical Thinking, especially those written by people involved in examining it as a subject, this doesn't reduce the subject to a slow, mechanical process in which there is no intellectual excitement. The book itself makes you think: even when you think an argument is increasingly wrapped up (like in the example of trying to reduce deaths among albatrosses), the author will come back and get you thinking again, and again. The material on decision-making will be useful in so many contexts, including business and public organisations. Different approaches to decision-making are considered, but I particularly liked the emphasis on using evidence and asking questions of it. The compelling question `what does the evidence tell us?' should keep being asked by decision-makers. For example, is Singapore's very low murder rate the consequence of their high imprisonment rate or is it due to other factors? The section on `how do we know what's relevant?' raises questions that other Critical Thinking books ignore. This is typical of what makes this book so good. It takes you places and gets you to think of questions and problems that other books don't. If you buy only one book on advanced Critical Thinking skills, buy this one. It'll change you.

enriching critical thinking studies and a pleasure to read
An excellent resource for teachers, students and the general reader; also a pleasure to read, especially in a climate of purely exam-orientated texts. This, like Roy van den Brink-Budgen's earlier books, engages in dialogue with the reader and is truly educative, leading out what is there rather than trying to impose. It emphasises that spirit of enquiry and curiosity, as well as healthy scepticism, characteristic of a good critical thinker.

zzzzzzzzzz
We're doing A2 with OCR for the first time this year and I borrowed a copy of this to look at as a possible class set. Mr BrinkBudget has written alot of books on critical thinking and I have read somewhere that he used to be the cheif marker so we thought it should be good but it was really really hard to follow - I fell asleep!! Definitly can't use this with our students! Also compared with Heineman OCR books........
