SPEECHLESS !!!! POSSIBLY THE MOST GRIPPING HOUR OF TELEVISION I HAVE EVER SEEN. REALLY INTENSE AND POWERFUL
Speechless. Dazzled. Not sure what to say here, anything I say won't be emphatic enough. As excellent as the first 8 Outlander episodes are-- this one (Episode 9) is even better-- it ramps everything up to a higher level. It was so incredibly intense, and the quality of the acting was so powerful, truly off the charts (I feel like this episode alone is enough to justify paying the Amazon Prime fee). Adventurous, daring, tittilating, clever, brilliant writing, brilliant plot, brilliant visuals, and most of all, BRILLIANT acting. This episode proves again that Outlander has achieved the world's best-ever casting of the two main protagonists. They are both insanely talented, and burn up the screen with their sizzle and chemistry. I feel like we as an audience are fortunate and honoured to be able to watch something this good, with actors this good.Caitriona Balfe who plays Claire is utterly beautiful, a feast for the eyes-- a bona fide Victoria's Secret supermodel-- but she also has such incredible acting talent and a wonderfully expressive face-- she's truly a revelation to watch. Utterly fearless in EXTREMELY intense, difficult, and physically challenging scenes, she easily blows away any of the top movie actresses working today. Give this girl some awards and recognition PLEASE !!!!!Sam Heughan (who plays Jamie)-- why didn't the world at large know about this actor sooner??!! He is a fantasy come to life of the perfect leading man. Tall, strong, gorgeous, and did I mention he can ACT !!! His Jamie is a performance so nuanced, subtle, sensitive but strong, funny but soulful, beyond sexy, he imbues every sentence with five different character traits. It's like he fell from the pages of the Outlander book onto our TV screens. He's a classicly trained theatre actor, and in this episode he had me in tears during several very intense scenes. Perfect counterpart for Caitriona Balfe in every way. Like her, he is a revelation. And this particular episode, focusing mostly on Jamie's story and point of view, finally gives Sam Heughan the opportunity to showcase the intensity of his acting talent. (hurrah!!)There is some spanking and a lot of sex in this episode, but it is truly and utterly integral to the story, and moves the plot forward. It's very emotional and beautifully, elegantly done. Looks incredibly real and sincere and loving, but also has a hint of kinky (which makes it fun to watch and definitely not run of the mill). This sounds a shallow thing to say, but these two actors are so physically perfectly matched--that it's aesthetically pleasing to see them together (naked) on screen, like looking at a beautiful painting. But beyond the physical perfection, they seem to have a true and deep emotional connection-- it is a joy to see them together as Jamie and Claire, and you want them to be together. They draw you in and you, as an audience member, feel somehow invested in their relationship. You care about them, and want them to be together and happy. A rocky road ahead for them, am dying to see the rest of it. If the upcoming episodes are anywhere near this good-- I know exactly what I'll be watching the next 8 Sundays!

Outlander : The Complete Series One
I must admit that I stumbled upon this TV series by accident and had never heard of Diana Gabaldon until I foundout that it is based on her series of novels. Not being a particular fan of romance, I came to the series as a fan oftime travel and Scottish history.Claire Randall, brilliantly played by Catriona Balfe, is a combat nurse and honeymooning with her husband Frank, played by Tobias Menzies, who wanders off to explore some standing stones near Inverness. Whilst out walkingshe touches a key stone and finds herself transported back in time to 1745 and the Jacobite Risings. She finds herself kidnapped by a group of Clansman warriors and taken back to their Highland stronghold, whereshe is forced to work as a healer, during this time she treats the wounds of a young warrior, Jamie Fraser playedby the brilliant, Sam Heughan, who had escaped the Redcoat army and an ancestor of Claire's husband, CaptainJack Randall. The season follows the start of a loving if quarrelsome relationship, and we see them grow together as theybecome embroiled in clan politics and the attempts to bring Prince Charlie to the Scottish throne.Volume Two see's Jamie return to his rightful land as Laird, has a witch trial and a most horrific homosexual rape scene, in which Captain Randall turns out to be a total sexual psychopath. Those scenes I found very difficult towatch, and more sickening than some scenes in Games of Thrones.Despite the horrors of torture, mutilation and rape, I found Outlander to be an excellent series overall, with greatacting and camera work throughout. My purchase was the boxed set of the Complete Series 1 which comprises 16 episodes on 6 discs, with a running timeof over 14 hours and some extras.Released in 2014/15With English Subtitles.Certificated 18

1743 and all that
Enjoyed the books so gave this a try.The first half of the season has some occasional voice over by Claire which was at times a little annoying with the start of the second half of the season with a few voice overs by Jamie. I liked having the Gaelic with no subtitles so it made the whole Sassenach perspective more effective from my point of view. The season stayed very close to the original story and I'm sure for those who've read the books this is reassuring. For those who haven't read the books, don't worry. The story unfolds well enough to understand what was quite detailed in the books. This series does not pull it's punches. If you don't like gore or quite detailed male rape then step back (it's done very well and covers the psychology to a high standard). A lot of effort has been put in to make this as authentic as possible but at times some parts of the episodes come across as slightly insubstantial hence 4 stars.Dr Who eat your heart out. I prefer this time traveller.

Well it did not follow book exactly but what show ...
Well it did not follow book exactly but what show ever does? I think the characters were well chosen for their chemistry of working together. Thus even though Jamie is not 6 feet tall his heart matches the Fraser.
