Excellent dramatisation of the novel
I liked the depiction of 18th century Scotland, the landscape and way of life. Tremendous efforts to represent the period authentically. Also a tremendous cast bring the story to life. The story itself, the first part of a series, sets the foundation for the rest and is the best book in my opinion. If you view the first series you will find it true to the book and may be encouraged to read/view the rest of the series.

So fantastic, I could rave on for hours
So fantastic, I could rave on for hours. The acting is superb, the story sticks so close to the book and the actors portraying the characters are just perfect. Thank goodness this is available on dvd, because I have no idea when, or even if, this series will be shown on British television. I have adored Diana Gabaldon's books for years, hoping against hope that they would eventually be brought to the screen.....and here it is! I am beside myself with impatience waiting for the next series to be finished, broadcast, then distributed on dvd....I may have to start reading the books all over again (for the 4th time) to alleviate my suffering. Buy this boxed set....you won't regret it. It comes beautifully packaged, with loads of extras and commentaries by the actors and crew on every disc. You will want to watch it all in one sitting, which you could, if you didn't eat or sleep for a day or two!! Fabulous.

When can we see volume two?
I really enjoyed this in spite of the usual problem with films of books where the characters do not look as you have imagined them. The cast do a brilliant job of bringing to the book to life and the scenery is stunning. As a long time fan of Diana Gabaldon's books I was impressed that the adaptation was so close to the book and has managed to keep the humour in the dialogue alive. It has even hooked my husband, who is so not into this type of programme usually. But why are we having to wait such a long time for volume two? Indeed there does not appear to be a release date for a uk copy. We have waited a ridiculously long time for part one. Considering the first few books are set primarily in Scotland why has no one other than a paid streaming service picked up the series? This is of a much higher calibre than many of the drama series on tv.

WOW
As a huge fan of the books, I was skeptical about anyone being able to play Jamie. All I can say is WOW. Sam Heughan is amazing and had won me over in less than one episode. And Claire is cast perfectly too. I'm thrilled with how loyal the show is to the books (I know Diana Gabaldon is 'consultant'). My husband even enjoyed it (and he's not one for romance - but this has enough action/adventure to please even him). Also happy they didn't shy away from any of the less pleasant scenes (like Jamie & Black Jack in Wentworth). Tough scenes to watch, but they were acted so very well. You really felt for Jamie and loathed Jack Randall! All I can say is bring on series 2!! Soon please!Quick note about the DVD - it's only the first 8 episodes (I didn't realise at the time!) but I got a free trial of Prime, so watched the rest on Amazon Instant Video.

Danger of being hooked
I would have given five stars if I hadn't been so irritated by the arrogant and self-satisfied character of Claire (the authoress is responsible, not the actress) and her anachronistic swearing, one wonders how she could have charmed anyone let alone the gorgeous Jamie. And she is on screen practically the whole time. But in general the series is thoroughly gripping, utterly convincing in its visual evocation of the period, of the Highlands (bravo costume department), and of the 1945 atmosphere with its sepia cinematography, also through the full-blooded and witty Scottish acting talents, so that there's perfect suspension of credulity and you accept the fantasy scenario. Suspense remains thrilling in the first volume, even if some of the shots show sadistic actions too graphically; the main characters are beautifully cast – despite my first comment, Miss Balfe is only doing her job in remaining true to the book. Sam Heughan as Jamie is phenomenal in combining heroic looks with charm, humour, arousing immediate empathy and thus cathartic terror at what happens to him. Graham McTavish, Bill Paterson and co anchor the film to reality, belying the absurdly camp "Druidic" opening credits, enough to put the intelligent viewer off, which would be a pity. A great, riveting series.

Outlander is rivetting
Loved this story and bought all the CD's. Some were really expensive but just persevered until we got them all at a reasonable cost

Authentic Scotland
Apart from the excellent acting, genuine Scots dialogue (and even Gaelic), the photography of the beautiful Scottish wilderness (complete with rain) and the realistic costumes make this an outstanding series. In fact I think it's the only film I've ever seen with authentic pre-1815 kilts!!!, and shirts that become dirty. Maybe this seems a strange thing to praise, but when I think of -- for example -- the movie where Christopher Columbus & crew, after weeks at sea, go ashore in gleaming white shirts like a washing-powder advert... was SO ridiculously impossible, it spoiled the whole concept. That kind of thing doesn't happen in Outlander. The Collector's Edition included deleted scenes, which were well worth seeing as they added to the story. The cut-outs of fluffed lines etc were fun. (By their mistakes shall you recognise gifted actors.) I truly hope there will be similar DVDs of Season 2.
