Romance Among The Strife Between Millers and Weavers
Henry's loyalty is to his family and to the family business. But after going to war and seeing death and destruction he comes back a changed man. He isn't interested in making money for the sake of making money. He is more interested in helping people make a living.Kate's loyalty is to her family and to the weavers whom she lives and works among. But being a woman she is relegated to the task of the dye house and working with the material. She is not allowed to participate in the discussions and business end of things that the men are.In a twist of fate Henry and Kate are thrown together by chance in a way that speaks of Romeo and Juliet, or Darcy and Elizabeth. They come from two different worlds. They come from opposite sides of an age old rivalry. Throw in the fact that this is in a time in England when women are not allowed to have opinions and you face some real tension. But Henry falls in love with Kate, but how will he win her heart. Kate's father is in turmoil with Henry and his father and pretty much demands his daughter remain loyal to him and the weavers and thus stay away from Henry and the millers. The story is very well developed. The historical and cultural aspects of the story are well researched and written in a way to help you see both sides of the issue and actually appreciate both sides, even while seeing the tensions. Will love win out? Will weavers and millers learn to work with each other to further each vocations livelihood? Will the beginnings of the industrial revolution cause a community to flounder into poverty?I trust you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Lovely and Enticing!
"He's back! Henry Stockton's back from the grave!"Kate Dearborne has already seen the local ghost with her own eyes; the Stockton Mill owner's grandson was apparently never killed in the war, for Henry Stockton has returned to Amberdale to join his family's thriving business, and while unbeknownst to her father, Kate; through no fault of her own, has just become reacquainted with the imposing local figure.Returning home after serving his country, Henry Stockton mistakenly believes that he is arriving back to the same peaceful community that he left behind; however, nothing could be further from the truth. His grandfather's iron clad business tactics have hardened his approach to profit, stirring wide discontent between the local weavers and those who have chosen to step forward and become employed by Stockton Mill. One man has truly crossed the line; Charles Dearborne, son of a formidable weaver. But it's the beautiful weaver's daughter that strikes the eye of Henry Stockton; in spite of their differences, and it in spite of his business partner's alluring daughter; who makes it quite clear that she wants to become Mrs. Henry Stockton. As tensions rise and the stakes become higher, will Kate and Henry rise to the occasion, or will they fall back on conventionality and destroy any chance of happiness between them? For, "they were two people fighting the same battle on different sides of the war".Enjoy Sarah Ladd's melodic style, as she demonstrates her own knowledge of weaving; using the power of words to fabricate a beautiful story.

This book ended too quickly
I love the story and the characters. This book has all of the things I am interested in such as, love, romance, suspense and a jealous woman who is revengeful all for money. Sarah Ladd is a good writer and she has written another interesting, fun book.

Weavers versus Millworkers versus family versus owners
Clean and sweet romance; a slow 🐌 burn romance. Fran Pennington spurns Kate Dearborne because of apparent class change. Henry Stockton meets Kate briefly on his return from war. New machinery has caused tension between traditional weavers and mill owners. Henry's grandfather has rivalries with Silas Dearborne who leads the weavers but shuts Kate out of decisions. Kate is 😠 frustrated. Henry is concerned about sister Mollie. Kate's frustration leads to a difference with her friend Jane Abbott. Henry has to depart from the practices of his grandfather. Kate warns her brother Charles and Henry about an attack. Charles is already estranged from Silas. Both Kate and Henry have to fight family and traditions to find their HEA.

Just the right everything!
I always enjoy Sarah Ladd's books, but this one especially so. The well-developed, realistic characters immediately grabbed my interest, and I found the plot a satisfying one, all fleshed out by tidbits of history of the time. The story moved along well, and I found myself quite engrossed in this tale of loyalty, struggle, and change. I constantly found myself wishing that the wonderful lineup of characters could tell their stories more in depth in a series... I will probably read this one again!

... this book caught my eye immediately and it didn't disappoint. This is a very well written
As you might guess from my screen name the title of this book caught my eye immediately and it didn't disappoint. This is a very well written, engaging story set in Britain's Industrial Revolution when those who had done work by hand for generations were being replaced by machines. But unless that sounds too dry, there's at it's heart a story of a romance that was, unlike so many books of this genre, very believable.. The only reason I didn't give it five stars, and this is being really picky here, was there was a lot of talk about "gig mills" - in fact much of the story revolved around the delivery of them - and even though I've woven for many a year I had no idea what those were, didn't find anything online, and a brief description was given only by around the middle of the book. Overall though I really enjoyed this, and will look for more books by this author.

Richly historic & well written
This book was perfect in every way. It had a realistic ending that wasn’t all fairy tales and flowers which I appreciate. The characters were deep and provided a full escape into the time period.

Very shallow with under developed characters and plot.
Poor character development especially of secondary characters. Conditions in the mills and and their effect on the communities barely hinted at. Very disappointing book.

Well woven tale
Although slow to pick up the pace, the characters did draw me in and Ladd did quite a good job of helping us feel for Kate in her dilemma.A good read for her fans.
