Dark and Deep
Although I really like Maya's work, I'm not a huge fan of house music in general. As someone who prefers the beats and bass of Burial, Kode 9 and The Bug this album really appealed to me. I'm not at all disappointed either, what a brilliant record and on vinyl with a decent system the bass really comes through. There are a couple of 'standard' MJC tunes which would fit on any of her other releases but in general this is a deep and dark album. I swear the track 'Drive' could pop your speakers if you're not careful such is its deep fizzing bass. The vinyl as well is double clear vinyl with 2 art prints which look great framed and on the wall.

So happy to have purchased this CD
So happy to have purchased this CD. I like Maya Jane Coles' housy stuff and I love the Nocturnal Sunshine stuff even more...The word 'hypnotic' keeps coming up when attempting to describe the music of Nocturnal Sunshine but that is of course subjective...In my opinion this is some of the best music I have ever heard...

Dull
Maya Jane Coles, for reasons best know to herself, would appear to want to be known henceforward asNocturnal Sunshine. It seems to be the way of things these days for'makers of Electronic Dance Music.A curious phenomenon this faux-anonymity thing! However we might choose to know her this new album is abit of a disappointment. Ms Sunshine's predilection for glitchy beats and dark synth textures doesn't truly sether apart from many other of her peers dabbling in the same genre. Occasionally there is a sparkle of somethingapproaching freshness but on the whole she is absorbed in a very familiar and over-populatedline of enquiry. The best of the bunch for my money (but probably not for the best of reasons) is 'Take Me There',an inventionblessed with an unintentionally hilarious performance from an enthusiastic chipmunk. I'm sorry to say it but Idon't believe the rest of the show really cuts the mustard. The repeated melodic fragment and echoing vocalloop of 'Can't Hide The Way I Feel' runs out of steam almost immediately; a small idea which doesn't becomeany more interesting by sustaining it for six minutes (repetition is just fine and dandy - ask Terry Riley - but youhave to be certain that you have'something worth repeating!) So too 'Intergalactic' which, despite its friskybassline seems more a sketch than the finished article. 'Down By The River' is fatally undermined by Ms Catnapp'sdull-as-ditchwater incantation and 'Skipper', despite good rhythmic intentions, just ends up rattling on and on (and on).I find myself wondering if Creatures Of The Night would really want to dance along to this.
