Colonel Chabert Paperback – November 17, 1997

"Colonel Chabert" is one of Honore de Balzac's volumes from his omnibus work, "The Human Comedy." The Colonel is a comic figure in and old military great coat and a wig who is ridiculed by young legal workers at the beginning of the novel. But, the joke is on the clerks, because Chabert is a war hero of the Napoleonic era who was given up for dead on a battlefield at Eylau. This translation from the French by Carol Grosman tells the story of the old soldier's resurrection in contemporary jargon. The novel is relevant today considering the service of soldiers in many wars continuing in our world. What happens to these heroes when wars end, or more accurately, shift to new fronts? Balzac paints the portrait of one old colonel who remains honorable and as a consequence seals his fate. The translation is very readable and the short novel is brief "scene from private life." The work will stimulate further interest in the monumental work of Balzac who had a relatively short life (1799-1850).

I didn't realize when I ordered it that it was in French. I guess I didn't read the description well. Fortunately it has vocabulary notations and I can get the general drift. I guess seeing the English name on the bottom of the cover I thought it was his translation of the story.

This is a beautifully written old piece that still works. The story of a battlefield hero given up for dead and returning to find his place taken. Not a long book, but with old-style grammer and vocabulary, a bit of work for a non-native French reader like me.

Cette ouvrage c'est petit mais merveilleux. Balzac a décrit de manière parfaite et avec gaiéte notre actualité et comme se qu'il a encore hommes que peuvent sourvivre avec son honneur intacte

Such a cute, touching story. It was hard to find in English for someone else who doesn't speak French, so this was a great find.

Balzac captures the character of The Colonel very well. Anyone will get sympathized by the Colonel. I recommend this book 100%.

With a slow start, but for such a short story, keeps an amazing tension, around a question, "Will she, won't she?" and makes one wonder why it turns out as it does. The standards of the times change, human beings remain the same, some with more honor than others. A bit of a mystery, a bit of a romantic tragedy. Once past the first 8 small pages, an easy and page turning read.

Il apprend que Me Derville ne consulte qu’à partir de minuit, et en réponse à la question d’un saute-ruisseau, le vieil homme déclare être le colonel Chabert officiellement mort à la bataille d’Eylau. Une sombre défaite de l’Empereur.Minuit venu, Derville reçoit Chabert qui lui raconte son histoire. Effectivement, les rapports officiels disent bien que Hyacinthe Chabert, colonel de l’armée impériale de Napoléon, grand officier de la Légion d’honneur, est mort lors de bataille d’Eylau, en 1807. Sa veuve Rose Chapotel, ancienne fille de joie qu’il a sorti du ruisseau pour l’installer dans un luxueux hôtel particulier, a hérité de sa fortune et s’est remarié avec le comte Ferraud, aristocrate émigré, conseiller d’État, qui ambitionne une carrière politique sous la Restauration. Elle est une bonne cliente de l’étude de Me Derville.C’est alors que dix ans plus tard, en 1817 réapparaît un colonel Chabert ! Chabert, en pleine déréliction, confie à l’avoué Me Derville qu’il souhaite à tout le moins récupérer son dû, c’est à dire sa fortune. Il a déjà entamé maintes démarches chez des gens de loi qui tous l’ont pris pour un fou. L’avoué compréhensif et empressé, lui explique que la tâche va être ardue car il va falloir prouver judiciairement qui il est, à des gens qui vont avoir intérêt à nier son existence. Derville et Chabert auront contre eux deux personnes puissantes qui pourront influencer les tribunaux. C’est pourquoi, l’avoué préconise la transaction. Mais comment va réagir la comtesse en apprenant le retour de son défunt mari, elle qui est remariée avec le comte Ferraud depuis des années et a eu deux enfants ? « Bientôt personne ne se souviendra de toi » écrivait Marc-Aurèle ! Balzac nous offre ici un court roman illustrant brillament cet aphorisme du grand penseur latin. Un classique incontournable plaisant à lire.

Arrived early and has yet to be read. But I am sure it will be good as it is by Balzac, one of my favorite authors, who I like to see as a French equivalent to Charles Dickens.The book details the mis-treatment and decline of a war hero in the first republic, revealing social mores and political contradictions.Definitely worth a read, as it is one of Balzac's shorter novels.

著者、45歳、1844年の作です。6人の弁護士書記が仕事中、老人が来て、古い着物を着ているので笑うと、デルヴィル先生と話をしたいと言う。デルヴィル先生は夜しか会わないとからかう。シャベール大佐と名乗るが、1807年ナポレオンのアイラウの戦いで死んだはずと言う。夜、シャベールは再びきて、思いがけない話を始める。アシアント･シャベールはナポレオンのエジプト遠征で近衛兵の中で大佐の地位を得た。豪華なホテルにいた時、娼婦と結婚した。アイラウの闘いの時、ヨアヒム･ムラトによる攻撃で撤退をし、死んだと宣言されたが、死体の山の中で生きていて、そして長い放浪の後、1817年にパリに戻り、妻、ローズ･シャポテルを探し、二人の子供を持ち、権力欲の強い夫と結婚しフェロ伯爵夫人という名前になってる事を知る。シャベール大佐の莫大な財産をすべて清算して、財産は税務庁と救済病院に分配され、税務庁の分は伯爵夫人に戻った。彼女は何の返事も、会おうともせず、うそつき、ペテン師とけなす。彼の話は信じられないが、デルヴィル先生は彼について専念する。彼女は財産をほとんど全てを手に入れ、老伯爵フェロ、彼女の夫は恐怖時代の逃亡資金となった。一文なしでパリに戻り、1808年ナポレオンに仕える事を拒否し、王政復古で地位を得た。デルヴィルとローズ･シャポテルはじっくり打ち解けて、大佐がペテンではない事を理解して、手形を渡すように促した。大佐は執事デルベクと出発し、サインをしようとするが、陰謀を巡らされてる事を知る。彼女は彼を色仕掛けで誘惑しようとし、甘い言葉を掛ける。彼は騙されたのを理解し、軽蔑し、サインを諦める。デルヴィル先生の支えにも拘らず、全ての財産を諦め、救済病院へ引きこもり、7番部屋名無し164号となり、誰にも知られずに、死にます。"何ていう運命だ、孤児病院から出て、ナポレオンのエジプト、ヨーロッパ遠征の勝利を助け、最後は老人救済病院で死んだ"とデルヴィル先生は慨嘆、叫びます。

Chaque page de cette œuvre d'Honoré de Balzac révèle un drame poignant explorant les conséquences sociales et humaines des bouleversements politiques et économiques de l'époque. L'auteur transporte les lecteurs dans le destin tragique du Colonel Chabert, ancien héros de guerre devenu homme dépossédé de son identité et de ses biens. Cependant, certains lecteurs pourraient souhaiter une exploration plus approfondie de certains aspects spécifiques, laissant place à une quête de détails supplémentaires. Malgré cela, l'œuvre demeure une réflexion profonde sur la fragilité de la justice sociale et une critique acerbe des valeurs matérialistes de la société de l'époque.
