The Melody At Night, With You

Keith Jarrett is a world-class pianist capable of both classical and jazz performance and improvisation. The ability to 'compose in the moment' - in both classical and jazz styles is not given to many. Of course most composers output is a product of their creative skill put to paper over hours, days and even months - not instant 'in live concert' like Keith. This CD, from 1999, captured his home studio versions of 11 songs from The Great American Song Book - very much like the encores delivered at the end of a public concert - not as dynamic as many of his public encores but very clever evening easy listening.

If you are new to Jarrett, you probably want to find another review before reading mine. I have a strange relationship with him, having long dismissed his work as empty New Age noodlings. In capital letters I'd have called it Not My Kind Of Jazz. However, I recently heard "Always Let Me Go", and found that I might have to reassess his work. That album brought me up short. He did, after all, seem to have something to say.This solo piano album is a very different work. Much more pared down, with shorter and less complex interpretations of standards than you might associate with him, and the playing is very understated. While at first it might seem pretty, you soon realise it's actually quite sombre. And that is where its strength lies.For me, the best track is Blame It On Youth/Meditation, a standard which slips into a Jarrett original. I'd have given the album 3.5 if I could, but in all conscience it isn't a 4.

The best album I have purchased for some time. Late night mellow jazz performed by a consummate artist. Just sit back ,relax and forget all your troubles. There are no weak tracks-indeed I would not have expected any. Keith Jarrett is a master pianist and the only thing you need to provide to enhance your listening pleasure is a glass of wine or brandy. Buy this album- you won't regret it.
