Vacuum bags that don’t require a vacuum
Several years ago, I tried out some compression storage bags that I’d found on sale in a travel store. The ones I got were oversized. One filled up the whole bottom of a 26” suitcase. And they also had an unpleasant odor that never dissipated. Wrong size. Bad smell. Got rid of them. Since then, I’ve been traveling with some standard 2.6 gal. sealable plastic kitchen bags, which I use at the end of a trip to pack away small items that will go into the laundry when I return home. No worries about wrinkles. The Prasacco Travel Space Saver Bags in the 50x35cm size, are similar to my 2.6 gal. bags. They are crisper than generic plastic bags, and the seal seems more secure and less likely to let air gradually seep back in. I practiced compressing a few clothing items to see if they offer an improvement over my current solution. One warning: The Prasacco bags don’t some with any instructions. So I winged it. When I later returned to the Amazon product page, I saw that I was supposed to start rolling from the top – where the seal is – whereas I had been rolling from the bottom. So I did another round of rolling. Instead of leaving a small gap in the sealed end for the air to escape as I rolled, I sealed the bag completely and as I rolled, I could hear air escaping from the bottom. But as I got a bit past halfway, I could not get any more air pushed out.The bags do seem to retain the vacuum, but I’m not sure they are worth the effort for packing fresh clothes I intend to wear on a trip. My t-shirts are wrinkled enough without rolling them into a vacuum pack. I’ll stick with my compression cubes. I may slide a couple of the bags into my suitcase to reduce the space my dirty laundry would take up. If you live in a small space with little storage, you may find the bags useful for storing puffy winter clothing, like sweaters. One woman’s sweater fit into one bag. You might want a larger size for larger clothing. The accompanying pictures are before and after squeezing out the air with (a) some loose, clean underwear (standing in for dirty laundry) and (b) a medium-weight sweater.
