Pictures at an Exhibition: In a Simple Arrangement for Piano (Get to Know Classical Masterpieces) Paperback – September 1, 2001

I loved the concept of this book and bought it as I am taking my Grandson to hear Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the very near future. I thought we could take the book and he could look at the pictures while the pianist played the pieces. The pictures are drawings by another artist, and they are cute, but the are not Hartmann's. Otherwise the concept is good and I am sure it will service us just fine as a five year old isn't going to recognize that it is not Hartmann's work and be disappointed. The simplified arrangements are for an early intermediate to intermediate student, I haven't yet worked with the arrangements so can not speak to that.

I have wanted to play Pictures at an Exhibition since I heard Keith Emerson with ELP decades ago. I've finally bought a piano and a less than year in, with this book, I am able to start to play it. The title says it is "simple" - but they are a wonderful stretch for me. More commentary on the pieces and Mussorsky would be fun, but there's plenty of other sources for that. I have ordered other books in this series.Here's to hoping some day, I can play something not simple!
