Carl Davis: Ben: Hur (1925) New Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]
E**N
A Beautiful Score for One of The All-Time Great Silent Movies.
Having watched the silent version of Ben-Hur on a number of occasions which is packaged with the Charlton Heston version on Blu-Ray (The silent version is SD) I was pleased to have the opportunity to purchase the music score wonderfully composed by Carl Davis for the re-issue a few years back. Make no mistake, the music is wonderful. The influences of Wagner, Mahler and Bruckner is unmistakable however, and being familiar with music by all three composers I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD. Profoundly moving at times, the music enhances the story of a Jewish Prince who is betrayed by his best friend, a Roman Tribune Messala. Having being sent to the galleys, Ben-Hur meets a Carpenter's son who gives him water and the will to live. The highlights of this disc are the opening sequences, the Nativity, (this is beautifully played and needs to be seen onscreen to appreciate it) the relationship between Ben-Hur and Esther, and the final scenes depicting the death of Christ and a new hope for mankind as Christianity begins to emerge. If you enjoy cinema music, give it a try.
