Are you having problems with your network at home or at the office? Before you buy an expensive replacement router or pricey cable modem, take a bit of time and save a bit of money by testing your cables!Convenient and Versatile for the Avid Do-It-Yourself-erWith the way cables can get snaked all over the house when hooking up your network, it's likely that a damaged wire is causing your networking woes. This tester will help you to detect a broken wire so you can solve your networking issue without breaking the bank. If you make your own patch cables and want to test that the wires have been correctly assigned, this network tester is perfectly suited to test twisted pair, straight, corssover, and cat5/cat5e/cat6/UTP cables with RJ-11 or RJ-45 connectors.Easy to UseUtilizing this tester is straightforward and simple. Insert the battery, power on the tester, and connect one end of the cable to the master side and the other end to the remote side of the tester. The light will indicate problems (if any) with the wires in the cables.

Works, BUT...
It works. However, it's a very flawed design because you need to see BOTH the main unit and remote at the same time(or otherwise take note of both and compare) to know if the cable is good or not. The way it works is that it will scan each wire one by one. If it lights up on both remotes, at the same number, it's good. Otherwise there's an issue(either open, crossed or shorted). But that's the thing, unless you're only testing patch cables and can have both ends in your hands, it's very cumbersome to use.If you're testing wall jacks for example or a cable that goes to another room, you need to plug the remote in the first room, go the other room, plug the main unit, turn it on, remember or take note of each lights, then go back to the first room(leaving the unit there), take note of each lights, compare both lights and "decode" the issue, then go back again to the second room to remove the unit, then go back again to the first room... It's just unnecessary back and forth between rooms. Before buying I thought it would show the results on both the remote and main unit, allowing you to see the results on either one of the two units, which I thought was convenient. But no, you actually need to see BOTH units and compare the lights! The previous tester I had(that broke, unfortunately) would show the complete results on the main unit, so I just had to connect the remote first, then go the other room and I would be able to see if it's good or not right away. I could then just remove it and go back to the previous room and continue working without having to do an extra trip like I need to do with this tester. If you have more than a couple jacks to check or if the jacks aren't quickly accessible (like in another part of the building where you need to use the stairs or even go outside), you'll waste a lot of time, and I would then recommend spend a little more on a tester that you don't need to see both units... Usually they will have lights only on the main unit. I will probably return this one and get something else.

Saved my bacon
Installed a direct burial data cable to a new garage. Had issues finding a signal. Thought that I had damaged the cable or the connectors and might have to dig up the trench and replace the cable (mucho dinero). This item showed up quickly and confirmed the cable and connections were fine. Upon revisiting the router setup, found that a setting was incorrect. Corrected that and “Bob’s yer Uncle”!

Use it quick before it breaks.
I used this to test home made cables. I tested about 12 cables over 3 months before it died. Pin 4 and 8 will now show as broken no matter what cables I test. Even on brand new factory made cables. I wasted a lot of time re-terminating perfectly good cables before I figured out the tested was the issue. Now I have to buy another tester to finish my project.

Great For Patch cables
This is a nice inexpensive unit that is great for testing continuity when putting ends on cables. The only complaint I have is you need to see both ends of the cable, which is a bit awkward if the cable is already in place, and ends in different rooms. I have had this now for two years, and it is still working great.

Great product
Inexpennsive but very good for testing Cat 5 cables for a break in one of the eight wires. A must have if you make your own Cat 5 cables as it makes sure your terminated the cable properly. By the way for those newcomers to the task, it is important you twist and arrange the coloured cables in the right order as per numerous images on the Internet to create a reliable cable connection.
