An ideal introduction to tenorist Johnny Griffin aka 'The Little Giant'.
This was the third BLUE NOTE album by the Chicago-born tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin(1928-2008) often labelled 'the fastest gun in the west'.It was recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on October 23, 1957 with pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers and the little-known drummer Kenny Dennis.Griffin is in superb form on six tracks including two originals by the leader, one from John Jenkins and three standards. Highlights include an impressive version of 'I Remember You', John Jenkins' 'Latin Quarter' and Griffin's 'Main Spring' and the soulful title-track.With its cover design by Andy Warhol and plenty of swinging hard bop, 'The Congregation' is an overlooked classic and an ideal introduction to 'The Little Giant'.

Top notch 50's Jazz on an incredible DOL vinyl issue
Sublime music which includes the ever reliable Sonny Clark in the line up. My first Johnny Griffin, whose style reminds me very much of Dexter Gordon's. The vinyl pressing and sound from the budget DOL label is of a very high standard, much better than some bona fide Blue Notes I have had recently.
