On fire
For four years, from 1978-82, Squeeze was on fire. This was a period of serial hits and the names Difford & Tilbrook were starting to be mentioned (to their boredom) in the same sentences as Lennon & McCartney. Of course, Squeeze had hits subsequent to those years, but the original line-up was the essence of a fun band who played and sang as if they were actually enjoying themselves. They knew that then was "their time"...They wrote catchy songs, often full of South London idioms, that told stories. But what makes a great song? Like great writing, it cannot be demonstrated. You just know a great song when you hear it because it puts a silly grin on your face (or brings a tear to the eye). The record producer Bob Clearmountain said in a recent doco that a Squeeze song always made him smile when it came on the radio. As a songwriter, you can't wish for more. (OK, you can also wish that people will buy it...)So, buy this album if you want a good ("best of"++) collection of songs. It's a good value 2 CD set. On a personal note, I would like to have seen "Elephant Girl" here, a song so catchy that it stays with you forever. (I still can't believe it was thrown away as a "B-side"...)But also buy the first four albums as well... At least as a start! Chris Difford is a classic storyteller who has chosen the 3min song as his medium. And Glenn Tilbrook is a consummate tunesmith whose tunes give strength to the notion that Melody Will Never Die.These were the sort of songs that left an "artistic impression" on you long after the band had left the stage and the final chords had melted to silence.

More hooks here than on a fisherman's boat
Of all the writers of catchy three minute pop tunes, Glenn Tillbrook and Chris Difford of Squeeze, must be the most underrated. Despite having written countless beautiful songs, only a few of them translated into hits. This album contains 20 of their best songs within Squeeze. It is an album bursting with creativity: smart, witty lyrics and melodies worthy of McCartney at his best. Included here is the brilliantly catchy and radio friendly 'Up the junction', and 'Pulling muscles from a shell'. The soulful 'Tempted' and 'Black Coffee in bed', and the joyous and uplifting 'This Summer'.Throughout the proceeding is Glenn Tilbrooks wonderful voice. This is probably the pick of Squeeze's 'best of' complilations. It is better than Squeeze's Greatest Hits as it covers their entire career, whereas the Greatest Hits only covers up to the early 90s. It is also better than Essential Squeeze which does not include 'Electric Trains' or 'Domino', both featured here. This album also comes up with a selection of their b sides (Essential Squeeze does not), including the lovely ballad 'Who's That?' and the tuneful 'What the Butler Saw'.But the meat of the album comes in disk one, which matches anyone from the last 50 years who specialise in the classic three minute pop song.Try if you likeThe Beatles 1Elvis Costello The very Best ofCrowded House Recurring Dream

Squeezed out some great tunes!
I first heard Squeeze when they released 'Cool for Cats', and I remember being struck by how original it was. I was 15, and they sang about all the things I thought being an adult was about. Pop acts at the time would paint everything with a rosy gloss, and the new wave acts would just be pessimistic about everything. Squeeze just looked at it realistically. Also they wrote fantastic songs.Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook wrote some of the catchiest tunes to hit the UK charts, and managed to do it for years. It helped that they had some great musicians in the band too, with Jools Holland tinkling the ivories for a few years. They also managed to cover a bewildering number of styles, from the Eurythmic's like 'Take me I'm Yours' to the cod Country and Western of 'Labelled with Love'.This collection covers their whole lifespan, and as a bonus throws in a CD of b-sides. Now that isn't normally too appealing, but this is Squeeze, so you get some damn fines songs, even though they were only b-sides.Bargain!

Great Collection from a great band
Needed a new "best of" Squeeze to replace my old greatest hits CD which no longer played. This 2CD set fits the bill perfectly. All the hits and more are on CD1 , plus you get the bonus on CD2 of rare B-sides etc. Great value and the Remastered sound is awesome. Really pleased with this album - if you're new to Squeeze or like me just need a really good best of then Look no further !

Great CD and DVD! Bought the item used and the discs were as in great shape (except for a film that had to be cleaned off of each - yuck!). Quick shipping.

2004 Pal or 2007 NTSC DVD
I would like all sellers to list including Amazon which one it is. As most of us have NTSC format, which I have bought 4 of these that I had to return. So I hope that the new batch coming to Amazon on 4/23 is the 2007 with the NTSC DVD.
