This is a starter book for the turner with some experience looking for better results.
Guess I was expecting too much from this book. I liked it, nice pictures, but still not enough information for the beginner. The beginner should know that turning is very expensive, very very expensive. I own a lathe, started w/ a mini, burned that up, then a larger floor model. Turning tools, you need the equipment to sharpen them & you need to know how to sharpen them. The lathe can hurt you more so than any other power tool in your shop. You have to jnow how to hold the tool. Don't think that was clear enough. How do you gouge out a bowl? What is needed to do that operation. Most new turners don't know that the tool rest that came with the lathe is probably too big to gouge a bowl. The tail stock spindle isn't the right one or the right size. I haven't quite finished the book as yet & I also don't feel I am qualified to give allot of advice on a subject. My best advice is to seek out a class you can take. Find a work working club or turner club & seek instructions from them. To me there is no better lesson than OJT w/ a qualified instruction looking at what & how your doing. Also where do you get wood from? Should I get a chain saw too? What about a very large band saw to cut stock up to size. Like I said, very expensive hobby. However the book will get you started. So have fun & turn so you don't burn.

Bought it as a gift and it was well appreciated
My Dad recently bought a lathe so I searched for a book that would give him a mix of projects and as many beginner tips as possible. I was not disappointed, This book is excellent, it shows clear step by step photos of projects and has projects for beginner to intermediate level. I have yet to receive my Harry Potter Wand, so I am doubtful I will receive one of the more complicated boxes in this lifetime, but stlll, a appreciated gift :)Strongly recommend
