Economics for the IB Diploma with CD-ROM

i rated based on the contents of the book. I will recommend the book to students preparing to go through an IB program.

This textbook covers the latest curriculum for the IB diploma. The material is well organized with multiple examples, case studies, and exam-style and review questions.

I am an IB Economics teacher and I have often struggled with finding the best material for this syllabus; it is way too advanced for any high school book and yet there is no quantitative emphasis like in most introductory college texts. The end result was that I had to pick and choose from all over because no one source covered everything satisfactorily. I had to supplement from college books, sites, my own notes, etc..After choosing to buy this book, my planning has become much smoother because we now rely primarily on this source. It covers the syllabus in its entirety and to the letter. It has many case studies (Real World Focus) that we can use to apply concepts and this of course is good preparation for the Internal Assessment. It covers everything in depth and leaves no questions unanswered. Tragakes even anticipates questions students might have and goes to great lengths to ensure that students have complete clarity, not just graphs and formulas to memorize. The CD includes practice questions, problem sets and a review on the quantitative skills needed for Paper 3. This will be a valuable resource to both teacher and student who can refresh and reinforce necessary skills that may have been forgotten. I reviewed several textbooks before choosing this one and the reason I did is because no other book is so in-depth, so comprehensive and so true to the spirit of the science of Economics; while not compromising relevance. There are also some supplementary sections which although not part of the syllabus, answer questions and enrich the content for the students that want to know a little more. I do agree with the comment on the somewhat boring layout. My students have commented on this as well. But Economics is the science of efficiency and at the end of the day it should not matter. I did not want to sacrifice content for beauty and by now the kids are used to it. I have even found that certain lessons I can just rely completely on the book - for example, "Outline how the following factors can affect... or how would you characterize or group these policies..." I have a mini set of books in class and I group them, make them understand the differences from the reading, and then present to each other. Very rarely does a textbook lend itself to this kind of student engagement, which as you know is always an issue in IB econ because there is always a challenge to balance content level with engagement. Overall, if you are going to make the purchase, this is the best choice out there. It is a solid backbone textbook and the students will only need this one source.

The book came with half-side completely folded, and the box was all ripped.. I think the books should be packed with cardboard first and then put inside the box next time.

This is a very clear book that is an excellent comprehensive guide to I.B. economics. If you are in a school that is using another textbook, I would recommend that you get a copy of Tragakes' study guide, "IB Economics in a Nutshell" from Noema Press (...). My students have had success using the guide to consolidate their understanding of the course in preparation for their exams.

the front page of this book is damaged at the lower right hand corner. I have to accept this as I need to read this book asap.
