In this Corner of the World (Omnibus Collection)

The author did an incredible amount of research to give insight into the daily lives of the Japanese people in the latter part of the war, and how after a certain point, things became markedly worse and worse and worse, with nothing they could do about it. Then put that research into a wonderful, sad, touching story, with a bit of hope at the end. Beautifully written, illustrated, and translated, with many explanatory notes. My only, and minor, quibble, is how TINY those notes were to read. Wish they could have printed them in a larger font.

So this is my favorite manga in the history of ever. It’s definitely worth it to buy the entire story in this bundle. The book flows like a movie— so mesmerizing. If you’ve already seen the film, definitely definitely buy this still. As you may know there’s an extended version of the film called In This Corner (And Other Corners) Of The World, which basically adapts more scenes from the manga. Now I have no idea where to find the extended film, (which is super sad) I don’t mourn too much since I have the manga and have already seen the extended content. Amazing collectors item, amazing story, amazing art. So sentimental and inspiring and cinematic and beautiful. I could go into sobbing hysterics over this story and book and movie. Definitely grab it!

Extremely unique, fantastic, elaborate, beautiful story. And lots of fun. This is a story about a young woman and her family in Hiroshima and Kure-city, Japan during WW2, but it is also about all of people in this world. I watched a movie version in theater more than ten times, and bought more than three original mangas of Japanese edition, and two English versions. You must read this, and this will be one of the most unforgettable manga in your whole life.

This is a masterpiece. Reading it lead to so many great conversations. This book is like the poetry of graphic novels. It invites you to linger and think and pull out its riches. A quick read would likely be enjoyable. But reading slowly and carefully led to awareness of so much depth and beauty. I loved it. It is at the top of my list of favorite graphic novels I have read this year.

(No spoilers)My first encounter with this masterpiece was the movie version (Japanese) directed by Mr. Katabuchi at the cinema in early 2017. Before watching the movie, I didn't know much information in advance or even the main theme. So I was extremely shocked and moved by it. I became a huge fan of it from then on.This extraordinary experience led me to read the original story of the movie, the manga (also Japanese) created by Ms. Kouno. The movie gave a much stronger impact. The manga's story is longer and offers you many detailed commentaries on what life was like around the 1940's. For those of who have already seen the movie, I recommend you this manga so you can learn more about the circumstances in the era.I came to love Hiroshima dialect very much after seeing this masterpiece. For me, as a Japanese speaker, it sounds softer and more elegant than standard Japanese. Unfortunately, this nuance can not probably be translated into other languages. However, you shouldn't be disappointed by this. Thanks to the translator Ms. Adrienne Beck, I felt drawn her beautiful and fine-drawn translation. I respect her outstanding work from the bottom of my heart. I think Ms. Beck tried to use some old words such as "folk", "ought to" or something like that to express the old days in which the wonderful characters lived. While reading her translation, I felt something extra compared to the original Japanese version. I think it’s because her words contain something she herself felt. I love her writing style and this manga, and need to read it again and again!

Amazing! Awesome!... Truly lovely and heartbreaking.I saw many anime and read some manga and this is the closest experience to humankind. The part that we forgot with time.Everything else as packaging, product condition was good and else.But if you saw the movie or you want to know more about this story, get itTo be honest, this one needs to be on your collection

Book was not insulated by padding to prevent damage from knocking yet is a sturdy book. It had evidently been used but is what I paid for.The story itself is enchanting and recommended on my part.

If you loved the movie, you must get the manga. The manga covers a lot more detail and drama of Suzue's life in Kure during WWII. It has more involvement with the courtesan Rin who actually has a pivotal role. The movie is being re-released in a longer version to cover the missing drama from the manga. It will be released in 2020...

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (この世界の片隅に – Neste Canto do Mundo) é um belíssimo mangá de 2007~2009 produzida por Fumiyo Kouno (mais conhecida no Brasil por Hiroshina — A Cidade da Calmaria) que acompanha a vida de Suzu Urano, uma jovem noiva que foi viver com a família do esposo na cidade de Kure localizada nos arredores de Hiroshima durante a segunda grande guerra mundial e que tenta passar por todas as dificuldades desse período da maneira mais responsável e otimista possível.Ou seja, ao contrário de outras histórias que pegam pesado nos horrores da guerra (como em Gen Pés Descalços), esse mangá descreve de maneira quase enciclopédica como foi a guerra vista pelos olhos da população civil que, no fim das contas, só queria continuar a tocar as coisas do seu dia a dia.Nisso incluem coisas mundanas como por exemplo, como se virar na cozinha com o racionamento/falta de alimentos, como reaproveitar kimonos para fazer roupas de trabalho, como montar uma mochila de emergência ou kit de primeiros socorros, como funcionava a mobilizaçào civil, o mercado negro, etc.Kouno também relata alguns costumes da época, como a história de que a noiva tinha que levar um guarda-chuva para o dia do casamento.Mas cá entre nós, Kouno também não é das artistas mais fáceis de ser traduzida para outros idiomas. Isso porque ela adora uma metalinguagem, desenhando uma quantidade infernal de anotações manuscritas, garatujas e coisas do tipo o que pode ser visto neste livro o que também torna esse trabalho ainda mais original e íntimo.No Japão essa obra foi publicada em três volumes que foram reunidas em um único tomo nesta versão impressa. Vale a pena observar que na versão digital para o Kindle a editora manteve o formato original em três partes — de devem ser adquiridas separadamente — o que explica a diferença de preço.Pena que as editoras ocidentais (fora os franceses, é claro!) não publiquem mais trabalhos dela.

Nunca me había interesado la historia de esta trama hasta hace poco que tuve la oportunidad de ver la película.Una historia única que trae a mente lo cruel que es el mundo pero de igual modo lo bello que éste puede ser.Esta edición del manga integrando los tres tomos en uno es simplemente perfecta. Los colores de la portada son muy agradables a la vista, las hojas a color simplemente fantásticas y las diferentes formas en que se narra esta historia a lo largo del manga es increíble.La mejor edición integral de esta gran historia.Gran calidad en materiales y demás.

I already own a copy of the Blu-ray version of the anime of this story and love it. It is a beautiful film telling a moving and heart warming story about a young woman living near Hiroshima during World War 2. I know Hiroshima and Kure and this gives added meaningfulness to me. The story in the manga has more detail than the film. The book and the film complement each other and I would not be without either.

Great slice of life, very underrated

この一冊で三冊分！あらゆるセリフ、背景の看板、擬音の全てが英語で書かれています。あの「スリスリ」も「北条」と書かれたバケツの文字も英語。しかもその文字が、まるでこうの先生が書いたんじゃ無いのと思うくらい違和感が無い。原作や映画は何度も読んで見ていますから、だいたいなんて書いてるか分かるから、英語の勉強に利用してます。ええですよ。
