Don't be turned off by book length
This is my second time to read Sacajawea. I first read it well over twenty years ago because my Mother had recommended it. I'm in a book club now and had recommended it...all but one member was turned off because of its length. So the two of us give a report as time allows during our one hour session on another book that isn't that intimidating to the others because of its length.I don't know if others out there remember the time when we had magazines that had several page articles where you got more in depth information or story. Now it seems it's been whittled down to a page or less with more and more topics crammed in along with little boxes of trivia. Our minds are slowly being trained to bounce from one topic to another like a hummingbird flits from one flower to another taking sips and is never quite satiated.Anna Lee Waldo does a splendid job in weaving this story using historical facts as the base and layering it with a wonderfully imaginative narration. I'm at page 177, less than 1300 to go. One bite out of the apple...the same apple which I'll come back to and take another bite and enjoy the feel and taste of it savoring each bite until I've finished it. I've never eaten an entire apple with one bite. Have you?

MAGNIFICENT STORY TELLING
This is one of those books that, once read, stays with you for life. I first came across this book many years ago as a teenager, when it was first published - and was drawn to it for two reasons - I liked the cover artwork and I liked the size of the book - nearly 1500 pages. I NEVER expected this to be one of the greatest books I have ever read in my life. For years, I carried that paperback novel around with me, until it finally got lost in one of my life moves. When I saw it offered on Kindle, I decided to purchase it and give it another read. I'm so glad I did! Not only was it still as sharp and amazing as I had remembered, but as I was reading it, I could actually remember having read it all those years before! Down to the details! This is an amazing book by an amazing author!!! I highly recommend it and hope that more people will either discover or rediscover it.

POSITIVELY PERFECT!!!!!!!
Having read this book a long time ago...over and over again...I've been searching in vain for it. Just for spits and giggles, I decided to check Amazon...OF COURSE, they had it. I read constantly...this book by an incredible author will go down in history as being sensationally accurate in every aspect. Second only to Gone With The Wind!!!!

Thoroughly Enjoyed This
After reading “Undaunted Courage” I wanted to know more about the extraordinary woman who made the trek to the Pacific Ocean. this book gave me even more understanding of the development of the West and respect for the women who lived here.

One of my favorite books
I got this book before a camping vacation. It is my third time over the past many years that I have read it. The first time was a paperback I purchased a long time ago. This time, I purchased this digital version for my Kindle. I really like the stories of Sacajawea and of Lewis and Clark expeditions. I liked this book because it is well written, and well researched. Even though it is considered a novel it is based on facts and theories as much as possible. I appreciate all of the references throughout and the further descriptions of persons and places. Best of all, the book takes you on a journey where you can imagine history coming to life and become invested in Sacajawea, and the other characters and places she experianced.

A long journey to the Pacific
I had to buy this book, having this year visited Sacajawea's (disputed) grave in the Fort Washakie cemetery in Wyoming and wondered which of her two reported deaths is the real one. But the book is a long slog. It could have been half the length and would have moved faster. I must admit I almost gave it up at about the 200-page mark. We actually know only that Sacajawea was abducted from the Three Forks area and brought to the Mandan - Hidatsa villages in North Dakota. The rest of the early part of the book is from the author's imagination. The factual underpinning of these early chapters is not without flaws either - e.g. a man loads his "flintlock" by ramming the bullet down the barrel on top of the charge (OK so far) and then adds more powder on top of the bullet (oh, no!). However, once the Corps of Discovery arrives things look up. We now have the journals of Lewis and Clark upon which to base the imaginative element and the author does quite a good job of creating a context for the Captains' brief notes. I am still reading at page 347, so the book must be worth three stars. For the very modest price that I paid it is worth having this book, anyway, just for the epilogue, the bibliography and the factual material at the start of each chapter. And, yes, Sacajawea must indeed have been the kind of intelligent and courageous woman here portrayed. I may well get to a four-star assessment before the end. Only 980 pages to go.

Fantastic - long but well worth the effort.
I am only at page 450 but thoroughly enjoying this book thus far: it is well written and the story moves along at a good pace, despite the depth of detail. Assuming the customs and rituals of the people’s we encounter in the book are well researched and therefore fairly accurate, the book also has significant educational value. It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It was indicated that writing the book was a 10 year project: well worth the time and effort. Loving it and will be passing my copy on.

Amazing story.
Alarmingly long and something of a heavy read at times, but the detail is great and leaves one awestruck at the courage and endurance of those early explorers.
