When it comes to knives size does matter.
This is obviously a class product. Love its aesthetics and its performance! The photo does not do justice to beautiful decorative markings on the blade by the way. They are very subtle and difficult to pick up with my mobile camera.I wanted a shortish knife blade around 6 inches. So many knife dimensions end up being wrongly reported. I have measured the blade "cutting edge" and it is 6 and a quarter inches long. (15.9 cms). Total knife length is 10 and seven eights of an inch. (27.7 cms).Totally recommended.....even if it is expensive. But for a hand crafted Japanese knife made to the traditions of Samurai swords....well worth buying and being proud to own it, use it and care for it.

A joy to use
For fine cutting an excellent blade. It is expensive for what it is but if you are like me and fed up trying to thinly slice fish for sushi, or indeed simple delicate sandwiches - a tomato, onion and or cucumber sandwich for instance, then it is a joy to use. If you dont have a need for fine cutting then no, dont buy - there are a lot of other good products out there that will adequately do the job and you can take your partner out for a romantic meal on the difference in cost! But the quality, workmanship of the blade and handle is truly craftsmanship and as I have said it is a joy, indeed a pleasure to use.

Disappointed
The knife arrived a few minutes ago, and obviously the first thing You do is try to shave Your arm with it. I'm happy to report that my arm is just as hairy as it was, which means the knife is dull. The next obligatory test is the paper cut, and it tears. Which, again, means the knife isn't sharp. What my options are? I'm not skilled enough to try and sharpen it on stone by hand, I'd likely make it worst, or ruin it entirely. And does it even worth trying when this is the best they could do in the manufacturing factory with skilled professionals? I'm not gonna spend £500+ on a "Wicked Edge" sharpenig system to sharpen a £145 knife...I rarely cook, peeling a cucumber and slicing it up occasionally, maybe clean a chickem breast and dice an onion is basically all I need it for, but I really wanted a nice knife for when I do use one. I don't think this is it. I'm returning it and buy a cheap one I guess. If that's also dull, then at least You could say "You get what You pay for"

The Rolls Royce of kitchen knives
I just noticed that this knife is not identical to the one I bought in that this one has a symmetrical handle suitable for left or right handed people whereas the one I bought is specifically right handed. I will leave the review below unchanged as it is worth being aware that there are different versions out there. When I got married a while back, my office had a whip round and gave me gift vouchers for a fancy kitchen shop, as they knew I was a keen cook. As we already have pretty much everything we need for the kitchen, this seemed the perfect opportunity to buy a top quality knife, as I could not have otherwise have justified the expense.Wow! What a blade. It is hard to explain just how sharp this is. Although it is now my favourite knife and gets lots of use, thanks to the hardness of the steel, it hardly ever needs to be sharpened. And when that rare occasion comes around, just a couple of strokes with a whet stone followed by a leather strop brings it back to razor sharpness. Many knifes are capable of being sharp enough to shave with, but the ease that I can shave arm from my arm (the standard official test!) just has to be seen to be believed.Lefties should be aware that this, like many Japanese knives, has an asymmetric handle intended to right handed users (don't know if they make left handed versions).the only problem is that once you have used this, you will want to replace all your other kitchen knives with Shun blades, and that will probably entail taking out a second mortgage.
