The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals (Special Topics in Tarot Series, 1)

Not doing reversals yet? This excellent book can help.
If you're hesitant to do reversals this book can be crucial in reading them. Keep in mind she gives brief reading ideas for the upright cards, so you kind of get two books. She is, of course, a famously insightful reader and she definitely made me see some cards in a more expansive and richer way.

I have read for over 40 years both upright and reversed.
I truly am a fan of Mary Greer. With that said I did expect more from this book. I almost feel as if she was rushed to just produce such a book. It is almost like - yup if it is reversed it is doom and gloom or just and opposite meaning of the upright card.I am comfortable with most of the definitions - but there are those that I just could not resonate with.

Brilliant insights into an often overlooked aspect of Tarot
With "Tarot Reversals", Mary K. Greer (author of, "Essence of Magic", "Tarot Mirrors", "Tarot For Yourself") has created possibly one of the best Tarot resources for the serious student of Tarot divination. I don't want to repeat much of what other reviewers have said thus far, as they have covered the material well. Instead, I will try to add to their insights. Many Tarot professionals don't use reversed interpretations. This is all well and good. But the numerous books out there that do deal with the concept of interpreting Tarot cards reversed, usually fall short in interpreting reversals. This could leave one to draw the conclusion that reversals are of minor importance in a spread, which is absolutely not true.Greer corrects this inequity with a book that, not only focuses on the concept of reversals, but equally weights the upright and reversed interpretations of the cards. So you not only get the flip-side interpretation of the Tarot, you get an indepth analysis of the cards in both upright and reversed positions, making this a highly valuable resource for professional and novice alike. Along with this indepth analysis, Greer also offers a very brief, "traditional" interpretation of the cards, both upright and reversed. The interpretations are the meat of the text. The introduction and the first two chapters set the stage, discussing the book's concept, providing specialized terms used in the text, viewing Tarot from a different perspective (reversals are more than just negative interpretations) and how to go about using reversals. There are a number of wonderful spreads provided at the back of the book, some of which require you to use all reversed cards, an incredibly innovative concept. The Hanged Man spread is visionary, having you read the cards in each positions as both upright and reversed; upright indicating an outer perspective on the issue, and, reversed being the inner perspective of the issue.Thankfully, Greer doesn't waste a lot of space on sample readings. Instead, she provides one in significant detail, and even gives readers exercises they can do in conjunction with that sample reading, for further learning adventures. For greater historical background and Tarot overview, novices may wish to supplement this text with one other well-rounded introduction to the Tarot, such as, Joan Bunning's, "Learning the Tarot" (included in Greer's bibliography), or, Cassandra Eason's, "Complete Guide to the Tarot". But this is, by far, one of the best indepth book of Tarot interpretations out there today. There's a wealth of information here for the advanced practitioner as well.Llewellyn should be commended for the nice layout and design of this book and for exploring these less-covered aspects of working with the Tarot. I hope this first book in the "Special Topics in Tarot Series", is indicative of the quality of books yet to come. I see that one of Greer's forthcoming titles is one entitled, "Tarot Court", which I hope will be covering yet another often misunderstood element of the Tarot, the Minor Arcana Court cards. Let's hope we can look forward to more quality publications like these on the Tarot.

Worthy part of the tarot library
Mary Greer is great, full stop. One of the golden bits of this publication is the addition of a magical/spiritual nuance to reversals. It’s a great handbook for both reflection and application.

My go to book for reversed cards
After I bought this I also bought some as gifts for my Tarot reader friends, we all find it the most useful book on reversals. Some of the reversals don't jive with my intuitive beliefs but for the most part they make sense and are more of a guide on how to read those cards.

Mary K Greer has helped me read the cards in reverse! Amazing book
Learning reversals can be confusing and even intimidating to me sometimes but, this book has helped me get over my fear of reading reversals. When I started to read the Tarot about 20 years ago, I just purchased a deck of RWS and it all just clicked for me. Many years later I wanted to study the meanings of the Tarot cards and turn to books to teach myself. When I did readings all these years for myself and others I did not use reversals, I just read them intuitively. Now that I have read this book it has broaden my knowledge of the card meanings and how to apply them in either a reversal or when I feel the card is not to be read in the positive meaning. I have been using this book often to memorize the meanings when the cards appear. I still read my cards intuitively, like I always have but, I also have more knowledge to what else the cards could mean to certain situations. The author, whom I love, is amazing in the way she explains each card with such detail and meaning. You can tell she really put her heart and soul into this book and devoted the years it took to write this book. I also love her story how she started this book and all that happened to her when she worked with each card in its reversed position. Her life was in sync with each card that she worked with, wrote about, researched and studied and I think that is why this book is so detailed.Reading this book will really help the beginner and the experienced Tarot Reader with Tarot Reversals. Not only is this book very knowledgeable, it also has some great spreads using only reversed cards. Would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn how to read the cards in reversed. This is a great series and each book including this one has helped me a great deal.

So glad I bought this.
I'm using this in conjunction with the companion book that arrived with my classic RWS tarot deck. The companion book didn't really give a full explanation of possible outcomes on reversals, this book covers this and more. It also expands on the information for upright cards. Between both I have a better depth of understanding of each card and how possible relations with other cards alter the reading. It's the subtleties that make the interpretation more applicable. Thumbs up from me.

Worth studying.
I am totally new to the English school of Tarot, as I have been studying and working with the French counterpart fora a few years. And recently I have decided to familiarise myself with the English school, so I was given a strong recommendation to read this particular book.
