The Caesars (Hackett Classics)

Excellent edition
The translation is lively and the annotations, which conveniently appear at the bottom of the page rather than at the end of the book, are abundant and illuminating.

Pure Filth!
I have to say this is the filthiest book I have ever read in my whole entire life and I am 60 years old. If any of this is true then the Caesars were the worst low lives that ever walked the face of the earth. I wanted to know what was happening in Rome during the time of Jesus' birth, life and death on the cross. I never imagined how bad it must have been, again, if any of this book is true. The reason I question the validity of what Suetonius wrote is that I don't see how he could have known such detailed information about each of the Caesars and their particular vices. And, even if he did, why write about it? I would not recommend this book to anyone and I am tearing my copy to shreads and throwing it in the trash where it belongs.

Finally, an accurate, fluent translation
Hurley's new Suetonius far surpasses any other translation. The current Penguin version is a revision of the old Robert Graves, which took way too many liberties. The revision improves things, but it's still Graves. The Oxford translation is just plain clunky. Hurley has got it right; a boon for readers who don't have the Latin. The blurbs on the back from leading scholars say it all.

as per BMCR
every so often I look through the reviews as the Bryn Mawr Classical Review. often their reviews are of works that are way too scholarly to be of any use to a neophyte like me, BUT this book, which looks extremely useful to a beginner, just recently got a glowing review from them. BMCR hasn't steered me wrong yet! I haven't purchased this book, but i have put it on my list.
