Hardship and Happiness (The Complete Works of Lucius Annaeus Seneca)

Poorly bound hardback
Hardbound by The University of Chicago Press. Nothing more than a softbound pasted to a hardcover. The pasted sheets separate from the hard back easily. Save yourself the money and get the softbound. Very disappointed as I wanted a long lasting hardbound.

Poorly bound, great content.
I’ve bought most of Seneca’s works from this publisher- and my rating isn't for content but the quality of the actual book. I opened it and the first three pages of the intro fell out. Other than that it’s a great book with awesome insights.

Must read for anyone
This is a transformative work that is as relevant today as it was during seneca’s time. A must read that will teach you about the important and good life. Funny the angry review of book binding. I would suggest studying more stoicism ha.

Superb, very readable translations
I wish that I had known about this Chigaco University Press series of the complete works of Seneca earlier. I have the Loebs, and whilst I hope one day to have enough Latin to be able to read the originals without the facing translations, the translations in Loeb editions, often made a century ago, can read really quite stilted. These do not have that problem at all, and are thoroughly readable, though I can't vouch for accuracy. The introduction which attempts to present a primer on Stoicism in general and Seneca in particular is slightly dodgy in parts (even though written by a trio which includes the highly respected Martha Nussbaum), but it's worth it for the translations themselves. I'm gathering my shekels into a pile to buy the whole lot of the series. The works included: The three Consolations (to Marcia, Helvia & Polybius), On the Shortness of Life, On the Constancy of the Wise, On Tranquility of Mind, On Leisure, On the Happy Life & On Providence. Each work has a brief introduction and following notes.
