"Doing everything supremely well this 'Finian's Rainbow' transcends time. Like Fred Astaire himself, it seems ageless" > > > > > He wears a ratty old cardigan instead of tails, a battered felt hat in place of a topper but one glimpse of those agile feet and you know he's Fred Astaire. The great entertainer sang and danced his last musical lead in 'Finians Rainbow', director Francis Ford Coppola's exuberant movie of the 1947 Broadway hit… Astaire plays an Irish rogue who plants a stolen crock of leprechaun gold in the soil near Fort Knox to reap what he thinks will be a rich harvest. In tow are his spirited daughter (Petula Clark), a lovestruck leprechaun (Tommy Steele) and a bigoted Southern senator (Keenan Wynn) transformed by misbegotten magic. The treasurable Burton Lane/E.Y. Harburg score includes 'How Are Things in Glocca Morra? ', 'Look to the Rainbow', 'If This Isn't Love', and 'Old Devil Moon'. Watching it, youll be in clover. Four-leaf all the way…

Fred Astaire.
Probably one of Fred Astaire's final films but the magic is still there.

Of It's Time...
The music and songs in this film are very good but, of course, the movie was filmed at a time when certain opinions were, sadly, okay. Thankfully we know better now but if you can overlook the occasion 'cringe' moment, it's an okay bit of entertainment.Petula Clark was a big star then and Fred Astaire could still dance, two assets to an otherwise dated piece.

Top flight song and dance routine.
Great musical. A aging Fred Astaire still cuts it, Tommy Steele provides the wit and happy go lucky charm and, Pet Clark does everything.

First half is slow but it improves
Irish accents by Americans didn’t really work.

A host of fabulous songs! One of the greatest musicals! (and about the Blu-ray).
Get the blu-ray if you can - the sound and picture quality are a big step up from the DVD. Firstly, the songs are just amazing, some of the best songs ever in a musical. Songs like, Look To The Rainbow, Old Devil Moon, That Great Come And Get It Day and How Are Things in Glocca Morra. Petula Clark, in her first musical as Sharon (Finian's daughter) is the best thing Petula ever did. Fred Astaire is 70 (he refused to wear makeup or gain assistance from lighting) but he acts youthfully and portrays 'a warm old man' brilliantly and there are lots of stylish touches to his dancing.Fault finding, the musical is too long, it should have had cuts. Out should have gone the growing tobacco part of the plot and the ten minutes or so dealing with the Civil rights movement. And Tommy Steele role as the leprechaun is annoying as he's a bit too manic. Nit picking over. However, I'm so fond of this musical I ripped the Blu-ray and cut these things (I pretty much removed Tommy Steele) and it's amazing how much more brilliant it is with those things gone!
