I've read this book in English at least a dozen times, and yet reading it in French showed me things I hadn't really noticed before, probably because I had to read more slowly. One also gains a new appreciation for reading things in the original language. The translator did an excellent job, finding equivalents for Tolkien's mix of esoteric and homely language, even managing to put the poems into a form that rhymed in French and kept the overall sense. Yet "Seigneur Sombre" is never going to work right as a translation of "Dark Lord" - one realizes there really isn't a way to say some things in French. Tolkien liked Anglo-Saxon words, preferring "Many Meetings" (title of first chapter of second half) to the possible alternative of "Numerous Encounters." Yet French doesn't have A-S words. It only has about half as many words total as modern English, and it's thus stuck with "Noumbreux Rencontres."It's really interesting to read in French nonetheless and improves one's reading vocabulary. My French is excellent, yet every couple of pages I come across a technical or unusual word I didn't know. A French-English dictionary downloads along with the ebook, allowing one to tap just right (on a Kindle) on a word and get a translation. The ebook does not however have the promised illustrations of the paperback.

Cette tome est assez satisfaisant. Pour moi, c'etait une chance de lire quelque chose en francais que je connais en anglais. Le translation, bien sur, manque le qualite de poesie anglais. Le chapitre de Tom Bombadil, particulierement, est depourvus de la poesie du style Tolkien. Neanmois, c'est fidele a Tolkien, et je suis enchantee par les nommes des characteres en francais -- Cul de Sac / Bag End par instance, ou Grand Pas / Strider. C'est un translation avec l'energie et la creativite.

Well, it's LOTR. It's great. Good French exercise for me since I've read the English so many times.

I have not read the books yet. They are on my list after I finish several others. They came in perfect condition. I skimmed them to make sure of their quality. The shipping was fast.

I have the audible version and the kindle version, so I can read the words on the kindle and listen at the same time. It is better than reading alone or listening alone (French is my second language). On my Kindle, I can select the words I don't know, and then review them with the vocabulary builder. This is a cool feature for a language learner.

Pensant retrouver en ebook l'édition du centenaire que je possède dans ma bibliothèque (j'ai été induit en erreur par la présence dans les deux éditions des illustrations de Alan Lee), j'étais heureux de pouvoir emporter cette trilogie que je relis fréquemment partout sans avoir à porter le livre relié de 1200 pages.Quelle déception lorsque j'ai commencé à livre le livre Kindle. Nous voici face à une nouvelle traduction qui jette à la poubelle plusieurs décennies pendant lesquelles nous avions tous en têtes les noms de Sacquet, Sylvebarbe, LA Comté et pendant lesquelles Gollum parlait à "Son précieux".Ici, donc, anciennes traductions, jeux vidéo, films, tous est oublié au profit de l'ego de ce nouveau traducteur qui nous impose une tripotée de nouveaux termes auxquels on n'accroche jamais.Frodo (sans le n, mais c'est là la moindre modification...) Bessac, Barbebois, et Gollum qui parle à son "Trésor".Je ne doute pas qu'un nouveau lecteur n'en soit pas affecté, mais pour qui lit cette trilogie régulièrement depuis près de 45 ans, le nouveau texte ne passe pas.Un énorme regret d'avoir acheté ces trois ouvrages. Ma prochaine lecture se fera avec l'ancienne traduction...

The book I ordered actually came two days before the receive-by date. That was useful. A used book but in great shape. Lord of The Rings is not a complicated yarn . . . just so immensely readable. I really enjoy reading the story in a language other than English. This is the story in French. Marvelous!

I ordered the 3 LOTR books for my son for Christmas, as he's studying French and loves LOTR... he's enjoyed reading them.

Je recommande vivement cette nouvelle traduction. J'ai lu la traduction de Francis Ledoux il y a fort longtemps et bien que j'ai adoré l'histoire, j'ai le souvenir d'une lecture un peu difficile et d'un style plutôt daté.Ici, la lecture vraiment très facile et le style est fluide. J'ai replongé avec un grand bonheur et j'ai redécouvert l'histoire. Contrairement à ce que j'ai pu lire dans d'autres commentaires, je n'ai pas été gênée par les changements de noms par rapport à l'ancienne traduction. J'ai lu quelques extrait en anglais et je pense que cette traduction est beaucoup plus conforme à l'original.Bref, j'ai dévoré et 2 premiers tomes et j'attends avec impatience la sortie du 3ème.
