BattleTech Technical Read Succession War

Essential
This is an essential product for anyone wanting to learn BT or play at an Introductory Tech level. It contains all of the 'Mechs you'd need to get started for a Succession Wars setting, in addition to some designs which just happen to be Intro tech but could fit into a SW game, if you so desire. While some will decry the lack of original art (it's a compilation of several TRO entries from various books), I love the juxtaposition of the originals vs the newer 'Mechs.

Great book but not quite a definitive replacement for the originals.
First of all, the good: Almost every mech of the era is present and accounted for making it an excellent resource. All of the original art is here except for many of the unseen which have new, great looking modern art that makes me wish they had updated the rest of the art as well. If you're new to the game and plan on jumping on with Succession Wars era units, this book has more than you'll ever possibly need from classic units to more obscure ones. The only thing missing is vehicles, which given the number of mechs present is understandable but if it's still a little disappointing to not have all everything in one place which this book comes close to doing. Also designs still in contention with Harmony Gold over its Robotech related claims are not included (some classic designs like the Marauder, Warhammer and Phoenix Hawk) which is out of their control so I can't blame Catalyst Labs for that. Hopefully if the legal issues are ever settled they can return in a future version of the book.Ultimately though, if you are new to Battletech and want to jump in, the Succession Wars are a great place to start and this book is a fantastic resource that covers material found otherwise scattered through four past readouts. For old fans it's a handy guide that consolidates those designs in one handy place and has new artwork for many of the unseen.

Great book for a new player
This is a great book if you don't have access to the older books from Battletech. The only thing I don't like is the lack of stats for armor and aerospace fighters.

OK supplement for the new players but a massive disappointment to the original fans of the game.
First, the book is not complete - some of the all time favorite mechs are missing: Phoenix Hawk, Warhammer, Marrauder, are not in here.Second - Some of the mechs in the book do not belong in it. The book is titled "Succession Wars". But some of the mechs in ther are either Starleague tech or post clan tech. These deffinitely do not belong.Third - Art. Some of the good art from the original was replaced with good quality new art. But all of the poor art from the original is still there. I think I know the reason for it. The art that was replaced was "borrowing" heavily from Robotech and I believe it was replaced to avoid possible copyright disputes. All of the missing mechs I mention above, fall into this category. This leads me to believe that they could either not get the replacement art in time, or ran out of money for it. In either case it was a poor decision to exclude the canonical mechs. And it was a poor decision to have a mishmash of art in the book. This is an OK supplement for the new players but a massive disappointment to the original fans of the game.

The Online 3039 TRO is Better
Like Classic Battletech? Wish you had a single TRO with all the SW Era Mechs that appeared in all the later entries? Then this product only partially fits the bill.It has a plethora of Mech, that’s for sure. It even has some of the Unseen back in its pages...just not the most iconic Unseen Mechs. Warhammer? Nope. Phoenix Hawk? Nope. Stinger, Wasp, Valkyrie, Crusader, Rifleman, or Archer? Nope, nope, nope, and nope.Oh, and remember all those vehicles, drop ships, and aerofighters in the original 3025 TRO? Yeah, they’re not in there either. So while this is a relatively good product, it’s missing a LOT of elements that were in the 3025 & 3026 TROs. Sure, you get the Mechs that weren’t in the 3025 TRO, but what’s missing is far more noticeable. Finally, the art style isn’t consistent. Rather than use one style it simply has recycled art from the other TROs. In short, this product is simply as if you pulled out (almost) all the SW-era Mechs from previous products and bound them all together.

My humble opinion
If this is your only Battletech Technical Readout then this is a great book. It will be very original. I on the other hand have almost all of them. This book was 85% of material from my other books. I did enjoy the 15% of new material.

good but
this book due to when it is written in character it is set in Ilkan timeframe so it is mildly schizophrenic with classic 3025 era machines next to thunderhawks and such like so very different tech and no real explanations of time frames as TRO 3025 stuff has now included star league tech introduced in TRO 3058 . Very difficult for new players i would suggest( no issue for experienced players) , as a side note nice to see some of the unseen returned with new art like the shadow hawk

Great resource: no unseen
Beautiful book. Lots of info. Shipping as always was great.Amazon retailers, for this kind of game you really should include the intire back page for description. Table top books often have specific units in books that people are looking for. Given the "Unseen" mechs were involved in the succession wars I assumed they would be included. I was wrong. For those wondering this is everything still produced after the helm core was found but before the clans.

Good if you don't have other from this early age of Battletech.
The question is, have you the old Technical Readout from this times (from the time of the Star League to the Fourth succession war)?If you have the olds Technical Readout this one no adds nothing to your mechs stable. If you haven't got other this is the perfect Technical Readout for the first age of the Battletech universe.
