Q: what preparation do walls need before using this?

Hi, Thanks for your question. If the walls to be painted have signs of mould on them, then that would need to be washed off. You can do this by using the Suretherm Mould Wash Spray. Q: Is the finished painted surface smooth afterwards or rough?

No. It is thick white paint, which is hard to paint on without brush/roller marks.
