Karuta are Japanese playing cards derived from Westernized cards brought to Japan in the mid-16th century by Portuguese traders. Although many variations of karuta exist, the version known as iroha-karuta is the most common. In iroha-karuta, the cards are divided into two sets known as "torifuda" and "yomifuda". The torifuda cards have a Japanese hiragana letter in the corner, as well as an illustration. The yomifuda cards also have a hiragana letter in the corner, but instead of an illustration have a written proverb whose first syllable corresponds to the hiragana. To play the game, the torifuda cards are spread out on the table face up. A yomifuda card is then read. The object of the game is to use as clues the first syllable of the proverb being read, as well as the meaning of the proverb, to find the correct torifune card with the corresponding hiragana and illustration. The first person to slap their hand down on the correct torifuda card collects that card. Another yomifuda card is then read. The player with the most cards at the end wins. This game is great for children as it teaches them hiragana. It is also great for non-native speakers trying to learn Japanese, as the proverbs help the players have a better understanding of Japanese ideology and culture. The backs of the 90 cards are also a puzzle piece when assembled make up a map of Japan with amusing illustrations of each region's specialties. A foldout map containing the completed puzzle is included.
