Briggs & Stratton 498144 Recoil Pulley with Spring for Quantum Engines, 5 HP Horizontal and 6 HP Intek Engines

The old pulley wouldn't fully retract the chord all the way and after taking it off, found that the end was broken. I replaced it with this one and presto, back in business! It fot perfectly and looks to be the exact same quality as the original.

When it arrived, I read the instructions (which are lacking) that said depending on the manufacturer year of your engine, the coil may arrive wound in the opposite direction from the original part. Therefore, note which direction your original part was coiled. When starting any mechanical work, I highly recommend documenting all of your steps at first for referencing. Luckily, I did not have to deal with this particular problem of rewinding the coil; however, the end of the spring that hooks to provide tension was bent in the wrong direction. Therefore, this was an easy fix, but inconvenient since it required additional modifications. After bending the end of the spring in the opposite direction (note: do not simply bend it in the opposite direction if this applies to your circumstances, since there is not enough lip to avoid breakage) I had to make sure I bent an additional 1/2 inch of the spring to make sure it did not simply break when repeatedly used. After making these modifications and checking to make sure it was catching, the lawn mower works perfect again. This was an easy fix, but I did watch a few youtube videos with the keyword "rewind starter" and my particular engine "briggs and stratton". Without the youtube videos, this would have been more difficult.

Did not fit even though it was supposed to according to manufacturer of engine. The part looked right, but the center hole was too small. I used to spring which fit, but could not get it to stay. So be careful when you receive your part of course. The difference was barely noticeable comparing the original to the one ordered.

I own a pretty basic 2013 Troy-Bilt walk-behind mower that's lived it's entire life outside other than I keep a wheelbarrow flipped upside down over the top of it for shelter. After 11 years, the starter cord recoil spring gave up the ghost. Throwing a couple of $ at it with this easy to replace factory part, should keep it chugging along for another 11 years.

Ordered this and watched online video to repair my lawn mower. Works like new again.
