Outstanding, big budget, high production adaptation from the very excellent book by Michel Faber
Outstanding, big budget, high production adaptation from the very excellent book. I'm a late comer to watching this top quality pilot. I had watched the excellent Richard Madden as the main protagonist in the equally excellent 'The hood maker', the first episode in another quality production by Amazon; Philip K Dick's Electric dreams. I was so impressed by Madden's performance, I sought him out on IMDB and hence discovered Oasis. Whilst the concept and premise certainly attracted me, frankly it was the fact that it was an adaptation of Michel Faber's excellent 'The book of strange new things' that hooked me. I read this incredible book several years ago, straight after reading two of his previous novels; 'The crimson petal and the white' and 'Under the skin', both of which were outstanding reads and both of which received stunning, adaptations (the latter being nominated in the category of best British film at the BAFTAs). So, knowing his pedigree as a writer and source material for large and small screen, I was on board with Oasis before seeing it. The pilot is beautifully and thoughtfully made and headed up by an excellent cast who carry and elude to the far reaching themes and concepts in this story very convincingly. The contrast between science and spirituality is a very exciting premise, whilst the sense of paranoia and creeping concern/fear amongst the settlers at the base of a newly colonised, distant planet are palpable and very well executed. The 'world building' is exquisite and the cinematography really quite breath taking I know how the story (in the book at least) evolves, but I would absolutely LOVE to see this pilot be given a full series and the exposure it surely deserves. All the ingredients and talent are there. I guess it's up to us consumers to make our views known. Hence this review, which I rarely make. Also, I am not a Prime subscriber. But, if Oasis were to be given a fill series, I would absolutely start paying to watch Amazon Prime video. Please Amazon people; make it happen!

Great first instalment, bring on episode 2!
Great pilot episode for a TV show. Refreshing to have a Sci-fi drama type show that starts off integrated into its own story, all too often with other shows the narrative of the first few episodes is designed to inform and introduce. Here we hit the ground running with bits of information but never complete explanations, forcing us to take notice. This lends itself to a throughly immersive introduction to the story, with characters and plot I feel myself invested in already, in a similar vein to the opening mini-series of Battlestar Galactica. The mystery and intrigue surrounding Peter's first taste of Oasis lends the episode a deal of enigmatic tension, at times building to thrilling levels that put me in mind of other classic sci-fi thrill-fests like Alien or Event Horizon. The mystery builds to an interesting cliffhanger that leaves me wanting to watch more and ensuring I'll definitely watch when the show gets picked up properly (as I'm sure it must!).The performances so far from the main cast is nothing but believable and gives the impression of well polished scripting and direction. Credit is due also to the fine casting, most notably Richard Madden whose unshakeable calmness is a big factor in drawing you into this new world. The score/ soundtrack is competent and engaging, entwining well around the scenes and punctuating them with great success. The special effects and grand shots of an alien world are lovely to behold, giving great promise to a fully funded show and what they can do next. All in all I look forward to watching more and learning where the story goes to, I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next instalment to be green-lit.

Would like to see more please!!!
A curious mix of intrigue and suspense, as all good Pilot shows should be. This shows first season, needs to be made. Also a joy to see Haley Joel Ozmond on the screne again. So a Priest/Chaplin Loses his wife to Cancer in about the year 3034 and then receives a summons from a cooperate mogul who has set up a colony on a planet that requires stay in space that they induce a coma for you to get through. He wakes on a strange Planet with people who are experiencing hallucinations and the hint is that the cause is spiritual or perhaps alien in nature. The priest and the businessman are ideologically opposed in a time where the mega rich are leaving the Earth because our planet is dying. There is some pretty rough language and one shot of nude people, so if you are Christian, Jewish etc, please be warned. This is not a Christian show, but I am prepared to say that as a Christian I would be prepared to give the second episode a watch, provided that the finale is not a blasphemous tirade against God from the pen of some angry script writer. All in all, A stylish and, typically British production. There is something just British about the way British production companies shoot film. Goodness only knows why? The Panoramic wide angle shots of the Alien planet are very impressive and it is a beautiful film to watch. You could simply put music over the film and enjoy the shots of expansive rugged bleakness. Come on Amazon, give us another episode!!!
