Q: HI. Is it as simple as removing my standard wall plug and replacing it with this? Thanks!

Ours was a new install not a replacement, but I'm pretty sure it used a different size electrical box so it's not that simple. It's bigger than a typical wall plate.

Q: If I mount this in a horizontal configuration, will one of the outlets be facing down or is there some way to rotate the square outlet module?

You can mount it horizontal without blocking an outlet, I actually have them mounted horizontally in my kitchen and it works perfectly.

Q: is the exposed face of the adorne popout outlet paintable?

The face of the outlet that is exposed is a plastic material and constantly being pushed on to use. I, personally, don't think it should be painted.
