Excellent reference source
This dictionary is great as a reference tool in terms of if your starting out in Japanese, its a great reference tool since it has both english to japanese and japanese to english. This is a Dictionary that any student of japanese should have as a standard tool meaning its a must have. I also recommend along with the dictionary to purchase as well Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang) this second book should be purchased as a companion guide, you will learn as your translating that the dictionary will cover 99 percent of what you will be looking for but does not cover the slang or basically the informal speech that sometimes you may encounter such as in manga and so forth, so purchasing Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang) along with the dictionary will pretty much cover you in terms of expressions and neccessary words, the dictionary every student should get to cover 99 percent of what you need but for the left over 1 percent get Dirty Japanese: Everyday Slang from "What's Up?" to "F*%# Off!" (Dirty Everyday Slang)

Good Dictionary
This is my first Japanese- English Dictionary (I ordered 3 different at the same time, this one arrived first, still waiting for the other two). It looks kind of good, I had to purchase Japanese-English dictionary as google is such an awefull translator when it comes to asian languages,It arrived with pretty good condition (therefore yes it looks new). Also have a brief introduction on how to use it.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the words are romanized first, then with Kanji,Hiragana or Katakana, whichever way it should be written. ( I know is good for those that are totally new in Japanese and does not know at all about Kana and Kanji, however I would rather like The correct way to write it first (the romanization in parentheses).Another thing is that there is not Furigana, I love that it have the Kanji in the words so I can know how it should be writed correctly, but I would like furigana as well as there are some Kanjis that are pretty advance for a learner.Any way thank you for this wonderful dictionary. I hope you can keep improving and getting better :D .

The best J/E E/J I know of.
For the price, there's nothing better. Most of the Japanese/English dictionaries out there either have not nearly enough entries in them to be useful, or, their Japanese listings are written using Japanese alphabetical order (-KSTNHMYRWN). This can be maddening. Also, most of the dictionaries that are using Japanese alphabetical order also neglect to include definitions written in english letters. In other words, if you look up the word EGG, they will list as its equivalent "卵." They won't tell you how to say it (it's 'tamago' btw) . They also don't even bother to write it out in hiragana. They just show the Japanese character "卵." This dictionary, on the other hand, will show you the Kanji for words and then they also spell out the pronunciation of the words in Roman letters.I have four of these dictionaries. I bought one, used it up, and then bought three more. I also bought a tube of very strong glue and glued my old one back together. I've been using it now for about 18 years. I can't praise the book highly enough.

Easy and interesting!
It’s amazing when trying to figure out the dictionary form of a verb or are in need of a explanation for a noun. It’s amazing! I enjoy it a lot and use it for my Beginner 2 Japanese class!

Never mess with a classic brand
It worked in the 80s, and it still does. I do wish it were a bit larger print...

I love this book
I love this book, I love the cover, I am very pleased at the content. This book told me that I have reached a higher level of learning. I am at a point where I can read the Kanji, the hiragana and the katakana. It is time to go to Japan and celebrate. Buy this book and study every word until the book tells you stop. Then start over again. Just buy the book.
