Perfect for an 8 y/o girl.
My niece loved this gift. She said it was a nice little challenge.

So much fun
We really like craft kits. I would much prefer them doing something than watching something. It is nice because they can spend the time doing it and then they have something special to keep. They are excited when they make something themselves. This is a great activity for a rainy day or a day when your child is sick or when you are just stuck at home. It is a good way to keep a child busy.I thought it was age appropriate. It wasn’t too hard. The children really liked how it turned out.I feel like this is good for child development. It kept my children's interest. It would also make a nice gift.

DOES NOT WORK!
This product does not work. Instructions, which you have to download from the site, were followed exactly and the product was set up correctly - it does not move on the floor. My 7 year old daughter was very disappointed.

Just OK
Fun but not as versatile as littleBits' other kits.

THE FUN IS IN THE BUILDING, THEN LIMITED PLAY VALUE
I've discovered that these kinds of "toys" are all about the journey and the end result is kind of anti-climatic. My 8-year old grandson is a math/mechanical wiz, so the challenge of assembly was where all the fun was. Afterwards, it doesn't do much but flop around while you watch it, so it's not something you'd really come back to to "play" with because it only does one thing, and isn't interactive.I guess it's not too different that a model car/plane. The fun is in the making and afterwards you simply enjoy the accomplishment. This kit has plastic pieces which connect together with connectible magnetized electronics. Basically, what you're doing is creating a flapping board which can be colored like a worm, which then flops around powered by the electronics. The real fun is the assembly, which isn't too complicated (kids will need SOME adult help, and you'll need a screwdriver which isn't included, although the battery is), but the "fun" factor diminishes greatly once assembled and all you do is watch your creating flop around. There's no real point or goal once the assembly is completed. That said, I would still recommend this because of the fun and skill involved in assembly. I'm new to the littleBits brand, and I understand that the kits are modular which I assume means you can combine parts from different kits to make a variety of projects, but this seems more like model building from what I've seen.

Great for a specific target audience but needs add-on’s to become more engaging
Ensure your target audience is the right age for this item. I did not look closely at the age range and my 6 year old was frustrated easily with it. I did build it on my own and found the project to be engaging in a budding engineering way, but essentially it is a one trick pony. Keep in mind though, that this is a starter kit so if you purchase additional parts you can build off of them. The item once built is a worm like thing that can be drawn on which my girl DID enjoy doing. At this price I would say the value is just OK. I would not buy this as a gift for someone unless you know they have an interest in these types of things. For the right person though that has an interest in putting things together that are mechanical it teaches great lessons and will fulfill their desires.
