Possibly the best available comprehensive mycology text available at the moment, or so it seemed to me at any rate.
About a year ago I had the opportunity to teach an undergraduate mycology class. It's a subject I am generally familiar with, and I've even published research in this area, but I'm not a trained mycologist and as an undergraduate college biology professor I hadn't had the need or opportunity to keep up with general advances in the overall field for many years. So out of a sense of insecurity I purchased about five current texts dealing with the subject to prepare for the class. For some reason this text eluded my initial search, and I didn't "discover" it until the class was underway. And, of course, it turned out to be the best of the lot! I would have used it as the class textbook if I had been aware of it soon enough. It's up to date, well organized, a relatively easy read, and encyclopedic in scope. Possibly the best available comprehensive text dealing with the fungi available at the moment, or so it seemed to me at any rate.

Content is Poorly Organised. Buy a Different Textbook Instead
This was the textbook for my mycology course, and while I am doing well in the course (my mark is in the mid 80s), I really dislike this book. I had purchased it early in the semester because I felt that my professor's lectures were too rushed and disorganised, and so I had wanted to read this textbook to make more sense of the course content, and to help me learn at my own pace. Unfortunately, it doesn't really have a good flow of information, and a lot of topics are split over many chapters which was really frustrating and added to my confusion. I definitely would not recommend it for an introductory course like mine was. I just ended up searching most of my questions on Google instead. It was much faster that way. There have been times when I've bought textbooks and never needed to use them, but this textbook I bought because I knew I needed it, and yet still haven't read it because it's so poorly organised. Definitely not worth the money

all you ever wanted to know about fungi
At last: a university level book on fungi to sit next to the classics of cell biology and biochemistry. Covers evolution, classification, metabolism, culture. I didn't know that fungal hyphae capture nematodes. Remarkable. It is an academic book, so to appreciate it fully you need a sound background in biology, but there is much of wider interest. I do hope this book indicates a new interest in fungi, and that there will be more university courses, and young students will be encouraged to investigate this neglected ancient life-form.

Einfach verständlich
The Book is written in plain words and easily understandable. It covers a wide range of aspects of fungi. There are a lot of pictures and graphics and a CD, which contains actually the digital version of the book.Another great thing about the book is that the authors point out the practical relevance of each topic. There is also a chapter about secondary metabolites from fungi and their use, as well as a chapter about biotechnology and genetic aspects. Unfortunately there is only little information about the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. The book also deals with taxonomy but (fortunately, I think) this part is quite short, though still enough for an introduction. All in all this is a very good introduction to mycology.
