You need to stop calling these devices “media players” and rename them to “kinda video players maybe”. Basically the emerging world of “such a cute little box hanging behind my TV” has not yet arrived and won’t have for a couple of more generations of this hardware technology. If today you are just starting to look for something where you can stop dragging out a laptop and stretching out a HDMI cable across the room in front of the TV, don’t bother with this or anything else for right now. Same goes for a smart phone hooked up the same way.Straight out of the box this thing is pretty worthless and you’ll probably want to start by looking for other firmware. My goal this money-wasting round of a time-suck was actually to seek out some device which would do something I thought might be easy, a simply slideshow compiled from local and networked drives. Seemed like a no-brainer, but no. All I could ever get going with the native firmware was to select a JPG out of a file explorer and return to the root after viewing one photo at a time.Otherwise maybe you are a Linux expert and want to tackle trying to make something out of this box from a hobby perspective. If you’re second nature is rooting phones and hardware-speak, then you may find a small bit of entertainment out of tinkering with this box, otherwise you’ll likely spend a few days to months learning how to build a Linux base called LibreELEC only to then learn this box is not supported by it and you need the old-school CoreELEC and eventually you will learn something called KODI can be loaded which by right and compared to what else you have to choose from may be a descent video player but not really a whole lot more. Still even at best you’ll be stuck with some tiny hard to manipulate remote control that zooms you back to the days of having to pound out text messages on a numeric keypad. My own opinion at the moment is it’s probably best to put all these little TV trinkets you’ve bought in your kid’s toy box and wait for the next generation or two to invest any real time or money. Until your smart phone can be switched to emulating a dedicated full-featured remote and these boxes get modern multi-core laptop-like performance and unless you are extremely bored, they are pretty much a waste of time at the moment.
