There are a LOT of nice exercises in this book but it's limited
There are a LOT of nice exercises in this book. It's quite good for that and if you shed using them you'll really build your chops, no question. He's got some good advice in spots, though I think the title for beginners really holds. I'm an intermediate level jazz bass player and didn't find much new here that I hadn't figured out on my own already or from watching videos on YouTube or Scott Devine's web page. To be fair, though, bass wasn't my first instrument and I play a lot. If you need to learn the basic elements of playing walking bass, it'll help get that going. However, a number of the statements the author makes are aesthetic choices that seem to be presented more as absolutes. For instance, he talks about sustaining notes vs. cutting them a little short and always seems to come down on the side of sustain. A real beginner might take these statements as being categorical and then have to unlearn them later. There's nothing much about pushing or pulling the feel, interacting with a drummer, or playing fills, either. Again these are all likely to be beyond the scope of this book, so fair enough. Just know what it covers and what it doesn't.

Fun and challenging
I really enjoyed this book and cd. As a blues, rock and metal bassist I wanted to learn Jazz. This was very easy with the tab but the exercises with no tab and just the background music proved to be a challenge but not impossible. I highly recommend this product

Didn't like it at all
Didn't like it at all. found that it was over my head and not for beginners. I found it confusing & useless to me.

Great book!
I really enjoy using this book with my students. It is very clear and makes a lot of sense. Beginning and Intermediate walkers welcome. Using chromatic approach tones on beats 2 & 4 is my favorite topic in the book. A lot of the approaches are used over well known 'standards' chord progressions. Excellent resource for teachers to use and for self taught players who are interested in learning. Looking foward to it becoming a kindle edition eventually...

another great tool for bassist
Dominik Hauser is been an active teacher all around. His knowledge is well appreciate and it shows once again in this book. The book is meant for beginners, but it can be useful also for intermediate and up.The step by step exposition make the whole learning process a breeze.... I've been using Hauser instructional material for all my teaching!Don't miss this, look also for others Hauser's book, worth it.

Best of my many jazz bass books
What a brilliant book! This book has a great mix of theory and practice and really encourages you along. I have the Ed Friedland books which are also great, but need a lot of work to get the best from them. This gets you playing and improvising from day 1. I particularly like the exercises where you have to make up the bass line. Not for complete beginners, but if you want one jazz bass book this is it.

Great book for the beginner and more experienced player
I am new to bass, albeit that I already play guitar and ukulele. This book allows for a seriuos playalong and helps dispel the myth about jazz chords.

Très bonne méthode de basse jazz.
Voilà une méthode claire et efficace pour s'initier (et même un peu plus) à la basse jazz. Les explications (en anglais) sont elles aussi compréhensibles et les exercices audio sont d'une grande qualité.A recommander !
