The Nerf Blaster Modification Guide: The Unofficial Handbook for Making Your Foam Arsenal Even More Awesome
S**R
NOT. FOR. KIDS.
The book is misleading. The description on the back is particularly misleading, and ridiculously inaccurate where it talks about the "simple mods for kids and their grownups." Do NOT expect to buy this & have your child be able to even come close to doing the modifications inside!! Well, unless you follow the recommendations for modification materials and go buy stuff a kid probably shouldn't have - here are some examples of the 41 recommended tools: wire strippers, white lithium grease, soldering iron, hobby knife, epoxy putty. You get the idea.My 13 y/o son is a nerf maniac, and already was making his own simple modifications & changing stuff around on his (10 billion) nerf guns. Needless to say he was super excited to learn how to further modify his nerf guns! Well, what a disappointment. The first 3 chapters are literally just describing the different types of nerf guns (spring loaded ones, bows, etc) and "nerf gun safety." Really. The next are about how to take apart SPECIFIC models of nerf guns to replace springs. If you don't have those specific nerf guns, well, go buy those too I guess? The meat of the book is on how to spot weld with a soldering iron and mess with the battery packs, wires, switches etc. I'm not going to buy my 13 y/o kid a soldering iron obviously, so the many many pages about it are kind of pointless for us. For kids younger than that, even if you buy this book, they won't be capable of using the tools in the ways shown. This will make it into a "my child is sitting there watching and not participating much" kind of thing. If you have an older child or are an adult making modifications, maybe the book will be helpful. I posted a couple photos of the steps - I'm not exaggerating when saying a kid more than likely won't be doing this on his/her own, if at all.So you learn about nerf gun types, replacing springs, then spot welding, then, a chapter about... 3D printing! Very useful if you don't have a 3D printer (we don't, making another portion of this book useless). The 2nd last chapter about painting nerf guns was pretty cool at least, and gave us some ideas. The last chapter made me genuinely laugh because it is entitled "advanced mods;" but it turns out it is just 3 pages of photos of modified guns.Overall my son was super disappointed with this book because it was useless in terms of guiding him on anything at all. I wish I hadn't bought it & gotten his hopes up. I unfortunately went by the description of it. That was a mistake. This is NOT a book for a kid and a parent to "do some fun mods together." This is a book of complicated stuff not meant for a child, unless they have a soldering iron, etc, or for an adult that's into modifying them.

The beginner's guide I would have wanted
When I started getting into Nerf mods about a decade ago, the resources for finding out what the heck you were supposed to be doing were pretty thin on the ground. There were a few scattered online resources, but they were mostly obscured by arcane terminology and steep learning curves. The quality of the advice also varied wildly. It was a process of trial and error, mostly error, if I'm being honest. Some years later, Youtube channels started popping up, and I found out that I was not the only weirdo in the world who enjoyed the idea of being able to lodge a dart into my co-workers ear from across the office (bit of a relief for me, less so for my long-suffering co-workers). Outofdarts was one of these channels and I watched everything he put out and learned a lot from him. When I found out that a beginners guide was coming out, I decided to get it, partly in order to show support, and partly to see if there were any tricks that I had missed along the way. It's fair to say the book has exceeded my expectations. The step by step instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow. The terms are defined in a clear and concise manner, with pictures (always a problem when starting out). The links to further reading and viewing material are a great plus. There's even a bit about 3D printing that I'm sure will prove to be a great resource when I finally decide to take a plunge down that road. Overall, I would have preffered this to have been out a decade or so ago, it would have prevented a lot of plastic wastage on my part. Highly recommended for anyone new to the hobby or even veterans who just want this as a resource book in their library.

This book is an absolute must have!
My three sons and I have been waiting weeks for this book to show up. It arrived today!I changed my schedule this evening and read it cover to cover. Easy to read but filled with fantastic information that we can use in our current and future builds. It is a page turner whether you are a veteran modder or new to the hobby.Luke has been a great resource for us (via email) on three Nerf HIRricane builds already, so “having” him next to us in book form for our three Stryfe builds is going to be great. We have a Kronos mod and a Retaliator build right around the corner, so the book is here right when we need it! And with three Stryfe builds to handle, it is great to have a whole chapter dedicated to that model.Luke’s experience, his ability to make what’s complicated easy to understand, his presentation skills, and his innovative approach to teaching (and mod design) is second to none. With chapters covering the most pertinent subjects, and awesome photos to go with every topic, this book was very well laid out.Luke’s teaching allowed us to do for our first build. Now we are all in! Thanks Luke. We would not have had the courage to try without you. Now we have a hobby we can all enjoy together...forever. -Art

Surprisingly helpful - definitely recommended
Bought for a 13-year-old's Christmas. Our son has gotten into nerf gun modding, and this seems to be the only book on the subject. Despite the short length, the (very) young recommended age range, and my expectation that a now nearly two-year-old book on the subject would get out of date fast, I got it for him. He's telling me it's been very helpful with some specific problems he had, and has suggested/inspired some ideas for later work. It's not out of date, it's systematic, and it gives detailed procedures with lots of photos for mods to some guns which are easily translated to others. It also gives some suggestions for further modding techniques (3D printing components, painting, electronics) which are directions I want him to go in. It helps he has tools and a work area for rc aircraft already. You can go through the whole book in maybe a couple of hours, and then come back for some details later. Recommended. Make sure to get a couple of magnetic parts cups.

Good starting guide for Nerf blasters modding!
This introduction to Nerf blaster modding was created by Luke Goodman. He is the person behind the company Out Of Darts. What he has created here is an excellent jump off point to learn about taking off the counter Nerf blasters and taking them to the next level. Full of pictures easy to follow directions but more than that it also shows you the nature of modding and things to consider. There's a full breakdown on the types of tools that you should have available if you decide to go into this. There are sections describing the difference between springers and flywheel blasters. Most importantly there are wiring instructions directions and principles. Most importantly there is a section on LiPO batteries how to use them, how to choose them, how to be safe with them and their benefits. This is a must-have tome. This book is one of the very best investments you can make if you are looking to expand your experience in the Nerf or rather foam dart blaster Hobby!
