An important Text for an important time
This collection of critical essays does much to clarify the readers understanding and enhance one's appreciation of the period that produced such great works as Ulysses and The Waste Land. By laying a ground work that focuses on historical and geographical scholarship and the individual movements that make up Modernism the editors have succeeded in portraying Modernism in all of its diversity. This book is essential to those who want a good, non-reductive introduction a great literary movement.

An excellent, comprehensive introduction to Modernism
Anyone studying English Literature at university level will find this book an invaluable resource. It provides a general introduction to the modernist movement, beginning, as it does, in the first sub-section with ‘The Name and Nature of Modernism’ by the books editors, Bradbury and McFarlane. It is split into two main parts, each of which consist of various sub-sections, the first of which continues the overview begun in Chapter 1, but in more detail. Sub-section 2 focuses on ‘The Cultural and Intellectual Climate of Modernism’, whilst Sub-Section 3 has a number of chapters devoted to a number of cities that formed influential centres of modernism thought; e.g. ‘Berlin and the Rise of Modernism 1886 – 96’ and Vienna and Prague 1893-1917, being just two. The forth sub-section and the last part of Part 1, examines in detail various ‘Literary Movements’; e.g. ‘Symbolism, Decadence and impression’ and ‘Imagism and Vorticism’.The second part is split into three sub-sections: ‘The Lyric Poetry of Modernism’, ‘The Modernist Novel’, and ‘Modernist Drama’. The book features all the names one would expect; e.g. Woolf, Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Eliot, Pound, etc. and, all in all, it represents an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the modernist movement.

very good texts on the literary modernism 1890-1930
The literary Modernism of course is only a part of the general Modernism of the same time. Symbolically it all startes with a World Exhibition in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, the symbol of which was the Eiffel Tower. But Modernism did not leave behind a century of literature but at least 5 centuries of literature -- or even 3,000 years. It was a complete break with the past. Why? Because the Industrial Age left behind the Agrarian Age. Modernism is a culture of the big cities, not of the country life. Thus modernist novels, drama and lyrics where impossible and unthinkable just 100 years before. There were only some minor precursors during the Romanticism. Modernism opened a whole new era of human culture. And this collection of essays does justice to the depth of that revolution.
