Better to know how to treat an emergency than to guess what to do.
Excelent source of knowledge and how to treating injures. The anecdotal recounts only are worth the reading.

Thorough, Useful Book - for Home As Well As in the Woods.
It's called Wilderness and Travel Medicine, but it is probably all you need for in-home first aid. I would be hard pressed to think of an ailment or injury it did not include. Obviously, chronic diseases are not covered, but just about everything else is. I learned several new things that I was not aware of for treatments of ailments and injuries.I have read the book. As others have noted, when you have a problem is not the time to be reading it for the first time. Full disclosure: I also have the electronic version of the book, and read it on my tablet (much easier to read). The print version is small so it can easily be carried in the field. I did skim a few parts such as altitude sickness, marine/sea issues and how to reset dislocated joints (it brought back painful memories of the doctor resetting my dislocated finger).Yes, a lot of the book is "get to the closest medical facility as quickly as possible." But where first aid can be used, Dr. Weiss explains what to do and how to do it. In a couple of places I would liked to have seen a picture, but the pictures used are clear. He tells you what signs and symptoms to look for and then how to treat the problem. It has a good index, which you will need, because the order of the topics is not clear at first. Major topic types are grouped, but there are no chapters per se. To save space, it all runs together. Why not 5 stars? Hydration/dehydration is considered a side-effect or sign of other problems. It is not listed as a problem itself. However, we all should know that contaminated water - in the woods or in travel - can be a major problem. Dr. Weiss covers the subject of water treatment in three pages in an appendix. While what he says is correct, I do not think it is comprehensive enough. He gives two basic, old-style methods for treating water - iodine drops or bleach. He does not cover the different types of tablets that are available for water treatment. There are more detailed sources of information on this on the internet. The subject of water filters is all of two sentences. Given that disinfected water is critical for drinking, cooking and wound treatment, I believe this section of a Wildness and Travel first aid book should be more detailed.Still, it is a thorough book that I hope I never have to use. But if I must, I can be ready.

Best Compact Wilderness Medicine Book
This has been my first-line book for three editions now. It is authoritative and very well detailed for such a small and light weight book. For backup I have the "bible", Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine Expert Consult Premium Edition, on my android, but I feel very comfortable that if the android goes out of service in the field, this book will get me through. There are two things it is especially good for. I made a one-page cheat sheet which crams everything I need from this book (left out some of the travel and diving medicine) into reminder-note form. Printed out and protected with clear tape, that is in my pocket every minute I'm in the wilderness. If you do that and review the notes once a year, you'll have a tremendous amount of knowledge on the top of your head and at your fingertips. The book itself goes into my pack. The other thing this book is great for is making clear the scope of procedures I'm willing to perform on my family and on others. If instructions for performing something are in a general first aid manual for the lay audience, such as that by the American College of Emergency Physicians, I'll do the procedure on anyone who needs it. If instructions are not in that book but are in this book, such as reduction of a dislocation, decompressing a tension pneumothorax, or performing a cricothyroidotomy, I'll do it for members of my family and close friends, but only after really thinking through the procedure before getting into the situation of needing it. If a procedure is not in this book, but is in Auerbach's book - well, that's the true grey area for me.

Nice size for travel
I'm hoping I don't need to use the info in this, but it's good to have and a good size to keep in your bag. I'm happy with it.

Well worth the prices
I am already familiar with this text from other sources but wanted something on my B&W kindle. First, it is important to mention that for outdoor usage, the B&W kindle blows all other products out of the water -- color kindle, iPhones, android, tablet computers are ALL generally useless compared to the B&W kindle in outdoor situations. I intend to bring the kindle on wilderness expeditions (I am a certified WFRer), and I then wanted to get a good WFA book. This would not have been my first choice, there is another one that is used in the training program which I received my certification from that I liked slightly better. For my purposes, familiarity is important, and I also find Weiss slightly less handy as a look-up reference. However, it is well renowned and I do not regret my purchase whatsoever, it is going to fulfill my needs. (That other text is also available on Kindle, but I also did not want two different formats of the same book, although I may get it at some time in the future Wilderness First Responder, 3rd: How to Recognize, Treat, and Prevent Emergencies in the Backcountry (Wilderness First Responder: How to Recognize, Treat, &) .)This kindle version, I should mention, did take the time to get the graphics right, which is an extremely important part of the value of this text, and I am very happy with that as well.
