A simple and easy to understand guide to a difficult topic
Pocket Tutor Psychiatry is an essential book for medical students. I personally feel that psychiatry is not covered in much detail in the pre-clinical years and so can be a shock when faced with a patient with a psychiatric disorder. Nevertheless, it is a topic that repeatedly appears in exams and is vital to cover with the increasing prevalence of mental illness within our society. I recently had an exam question about alcohol withdrawal and I had absolutely no idea how to approach it. I returned from the exam and looked in this book and I so wish I had the book earlier! There is a whole section on alcohol withdrawal and I now know about Delirium Tremens and would be able to identify it.I particularly like that each section of the book begins with a clinical scenario describing a patient with the disorder in question. This is really useful as it gives me an idea of what to look out for in clinical practice and what may be said in an exam question. The causes, investigations and treatments are covered in the perfect amount of detail- it is a pocket guide so there is a manageable amount of information unlike some of the scary psychiatry textbooks. I also like that there is an entire chapter about services and legislation. This is quite complex but is so important to consider with any patient you come across. This section is easy to understand and I know exactly what I need to know. The diagrams explaining how substances or disorders affect the brain are simple which is great because it is such a difficult topic. This also makes the book more interactive; the diagrams and tables and "clinical insight' boxes break up the text and make the topic really interesting. I personally do not want to pursue a career in psychiatry and do not particularly enjoy the topic but I am very aware how important it is to consider in any speciality. I would therefore recommend this book to anyone like myself- it covers what you need to know in a simple and visually pleasing way.

The ideal pocket guide for psychiatry
A pocket guide must be concise, comprehensive, accurate, readable and easy to dip in & out of in a hurry.Pocket Tutor Psychiatry ticks all the boxes. Before reading it, I feared that a pocket guide could not cover enough relevant content to be useful. I was wrong to be skeptical. The succinct writing style imparts large amounts of information clearly and crisply.Every chapter begins with a clinical scenario, placing content into the appropriate practical context. The rest of the chapter is a judicious blend of text, tables, charts and bullet points that allow the reader to rapidly navigate to the part they're interested in. Psychiatry is frequently an intimidating subject for medical students and junior doctors. I feel that this book's astute balance of readable and comprehensive content will positively engage the next generation of doctors, hopefully drawing more of them into the field. Definitely worth getting!

Very useful new psych textbook
Compared to 10 years ago, there are loads of psych textbooks now on the market ranging from multi-volume to short guide format. I don't know whether this explosion of publishing activity reflects a growing understanding of the importance of psychiatry or a worrying lack of knowledge about the subject among some doctors... :)Anyway, Pocket Tutor Psychiatry fills a useful niche towards the more concise end of the range. It gets the balance right between brevity and inclusivity, with good layout work making it a handy book to have around when you want to quickly double-check a fact. It's also surprisingly enjoyable to read (as far as a textbook can be!) with case studies and other occasional asides brightening the mood.If you're after a book to quickly get up to speed (or refresh the memory), I reckon Pocket Tutor Psychiatry will do the trick!
