OKAY, BUT. . .
Like other Dover publications, the Best Works of Aubrey Beardsley is okay, but only in pretty basic terms. The paper is cheap, slightly off-color, slightly beige, and therefore doesn't do justice to Beardsley's use of black and white as equally vivid, equally striking and necessary. The upshot is a relatively dreary presentation of masterly graphic work.

I am a big fan of Aubrey Beardsley's style of black and white work. He is head and shoulders above the rest. His style can be recognized in any context, ant the only English practioner in modern times that I am aware of is the writer-illustrator Tanith Lee

Book came ruined, soaked in perfume.
This would have been a 5-star purchase, had it not been for the damaged copy Amazon sent me. It appeared to have been soaked in some kind of perfume; every page stained and wrinkled and the back cover ruined. (See photos.) I have returned the book for refund. Almost just put it in the trash because the scent was so strong and I'm allergic. I love Beardsley's work and wanted to love this book. Most disappointing experience.

Beardsley censored.
This book is NOT the best of Aubrey Beardsley. Many of the illustrations are "expurgated" which mean censored. Dover Publications has deleted key components (shame on those involved) of the illustrations and Beardsley's meaning and artist expression. Genitals, which are on the originals, have been removed from his works thereby altering the actual scene. Beardsley himself said "I have one aim - the grotesque." and "If I am not grotesque I am nothing." He would have been insulted by this publication. This makes this representation of his work a travesty and not representational. Not recommended.

reasonable book
Nice book, large, clear prints. Does not include the drawings contained in first edition of 'Aubrey Beardsley's Erotic Universe' so have had to buy separately (mine was ruined in house fire) - this is probably due to copyright or access issues.

You get what you pay for
Althgough the book provides a sampling of Beardsley's work, the paper quality leaves a lot to be desired especially for showing such an important artist. If you need a cheap and cheerful introduction to the artist fine but if you are serious then spend more on a better quality publication.
