HATED IT
You can say it is a love-hate relationship. The description did not say if this a true story or if it was a legendary story written by a journalist who is enthused by the common desire of women to be fought and desired by every thread of masculinity. I'm going with B.I am taking time to write this with the intention of discussion, not a review. My star rating above is still accurate about my movie rating. So, I am not a theologian although it would be amazing. I am not a clinical psychologist although it would be amazing. I am not a religious expert although it would be amazing. Not a historian and not a philosopher. But what I am, let me bring it to the "alter". As I grew I watched the earth live life pivoting around me. I was nothing from my vantage point and probably those around me. Sad to be honest. Since then I have read a lot. I have read studies about the brain. I have studied psychology. Studied theology. Studied men. Studied women. Studied history. Studied physics. Studied dozens of ologies. Not big on earth science, I go to Dr. Kent Hovind for that, he's getting up there in age so listen to him while you can.Kings in history never let an enemy live I believe. When a King does, it ends the same way this movie does. What is victory without setting up an heir for the next generation? (side note: God does not need an heir when spirits are eternal components, so there are some religious facts for the future that do not play out in our physical world. I mention that because many religions take religious truth and try to make it natural order). What is life without raising children and teaching them life is not fair? What is a kingdom that lives for yesterday and does not build pillars for tomorrow? We all believe in some figment of God; I am a Christian, applies to me too. God has a "bride". She is the Church. You can see us, the Church, without fear and we smile often, over dramatize happy feelings for babies, and live free. We love because we are commanded to. We listen to God's commands because we have a hope of a future with Him. Hope comes from Truth. And the Bible says He is building a place for us. Riddle me this: when a place has a true King, of who encompasses the greatest masculinity, leaves a future bride of His when there is a true threat for the palace? This is where the movie and true history part ways I believe. Ethics are pillars of a functional society, not rules for a dysfunctional asylum. But when there is a threat against the motherland, who the f*** puts an enemy above women? No true king in my book. That enemies head an all his followers will be slaughtered in a blood bath. The end of this movie is the greatest ending I have ever seen in a movie. That is theology at its finest in that predicament. A woman (feminine honor, livelihood, heart, physical safety, and all the facets that make a woman a woman in perfection) is worth more than mere physical breath. The Bible asks where can a good woman be found? Have you met a man that has had NO, absolutely NO introduction to sexual neurochemicals before marries a woman who knows who she is in the eyes of God? My point. Back then, yes we would see abstinence. Science is lovely and all your prayers cannot undo a dead child in Haiti's earthquake, a woman in a cage, Joan of Arc, or your sin (there is just a reconciliation). This is proven by Jesus. Jesus lived perfect; only by the will of God was He taken from holiness to visit Hell. While in Hell God granted His holiness back for Jesus to take the keys of Hell as He walked out. The taking of the keys meant His bride would never leave her place of honor - it is the metaphor of equality in male/female differences. His enemies would NEVER touch her. God's enemies will never touch her for the wrath of God has the power bring back a beating heart again, and escape Hell and rescue His bride while His bride still has no freaking idea what's going on - she (meaning us) still believes in co-ed classrooms (I'm sorry, that was mean - but true. We went to teaching men and women together in classes to asking why do we have gender issues? Well, in all 400 million years of earth gravity has never messed up - meaning, science is stable and men and women are earths apart)The 5 stars of the movie were given because of the script, actors, the choice of the king and queen, and the production. But this was not how the Middle Ages ran operations I think. The moment you speak of the king's wife, you died. No creature in any forsaken land cares how you die. Armed or unarmed. Shot in the front or shot in the back. You will be slayed without any mercy. Why? Women, that's why. Why would a king let you live and potentially divide the kingdom? That's silly. It's just Hollywood.

Sensitive people, just skip this.
I did not enjoy this movie much. I watched it all the way through and fast forwarded through what violence I could (but most of it just snuck up on you and was there from the beginning). Very dramatic and engaging but although filled with visually stunning artistic sets and costumes (his trademark and like only he & India can do) and cast with fine actors of highest caliber (to the film's credit) this was just a dark and somber, violent waste of time overall. Good part was the queen's ingenuity. Her relationship with him wasn't that palpable really. The end which was supposedly so heroic (and certainly the women had valor if it was history) was also really hard to imagine and I felt the characters could have come up with a more humane way to make their devastating statement (but I won't say more or it's a spoiler). This movie left me with another sad reflection of how the world is so sick that people find films like these (barbaric, violent, backstabbing films with some good 'guys') to be what sells out in theaters. Another example is Bahubali (not a Sanjay Leela film but similar to what I’m saying; it also in one or two places had tremendously magnificent scenes, but they were obscured by a violent, power hungry film of ancient times that was sub-human overall and caused me to boycott seeing Bahubali 2).Maybe if I didn't have such respect and awe for what Sanjay Leela Bhansali (the film maker) had done previously it wouldn't be such a blow. When he started his career (or from what I’ve seen) I thought he was the best film creator of all time. He also composes the music for his films. Khamoshi filmed in Goa was simple but moving. ‘Black’ was an amazing story, so well-acted. Then simply mind-blowingly good was Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, deeply touching by the end. Saawariya is a totally unique artistic masterpiece. Devdas a beautiful (then sad but still beautiful) classic love story, profoundly visually beautiful and well-acted. (The sets and costumes and music of the last-named 3 will knock your socks of.f) Guzaarish is unique and superb and sad/touching; you got fully involved in his plight; Hritrik’s one dance scene a memorable classic delight. All those are stunning masterpieces of depth and unbelievable scope and artistic beauty far beyond anything this Westerner had ever seen. After those films mentioned..., what happened? His flamboyant (should-have-been-wonderful) Indian Romeo & Juliet story Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was so crass and extremely violent that their courtship scene had knives at each other's throat as part of the supposed-seduction and I turned it off and threw it in the trash literally, the DVD I'd ordered. Admittedly, Bajirao Mastani was a masterpiece with some of the most magnificent sets & costumes imaginable, just hard to watch; much, much too violent and unsettling for long afterward, but had some things that I felt it made it worth watching; it at least touched your heart and you felt the love story.. But now, this one Padmaavat. Although they went through hell via Pakistan/India racist (or however you'd classify it) issues and reaction to the authenticity of the story from the territory of those whose story it was, (with riots and death threats to Deepika for even being in the film, and he almost wasn't allowed to release this film at all at least in India) ..., maybe that impacted some of the final production. You think? ;-) I heard they had to cut some parts out? But anyway, Padmaavat next to those last two films I mentioned just had me wondering: why? Why all this taking us back to the barbaric days has become his new thing? The worst part is that such talent as his goes to these barbaric supposed-history films of rulers of kingdoms, luring you in with the magnificent sets and actors, then assulting you with ongoing violence, when instead he could be using that talent to move the heart and inspire or delight the country and the world with his genius. If you see this film and what he’s capable of, you’ll probably know what I mean. (I recommend highly the ones mentioned in the second paragraph of this review, dated now a bit; the favorites being Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Saawariya and Devdas to see what I mean.) I hear he's working on a new one. Seems I have to see his films even with this not-so-glowing review because there is just no one like him. Hope it's a good one.

Klare Kaufempfehlung! *******
