Wonderfully eclectic and fascinating compendium, satisfying if you want more native american stories
I first read excerpts from this book when I was in middle school and have been looking for it ever since. These stories are important to the cultural understanding of Native Americans, their history, and where a lot of their values stem from, and if you do not hear these stories orally, this is a great resource for a lot of them. The stories are organized by themes such as creation/ heritage stories, cataclysms and natural disaster myths, etc. I haven't finished the book (there is a lot of content) but so far it provides concise summaries and context for each story such as what tribe the story is for/ about, some biographical information about the orator and their oral tradition, as well as location and some significant historical facts about the time periods when historians believe the stories could have originated.

Great read
I absolutely loved this book and I've read many mythology and folklore books focusing on different groups. The book was narrated in an engaging manner, grammatically sound, flowed smoothly and and overall was a great read. Additionally, there are a vast selection of stories from different Native American groups, which was fantastic and gave a more rounded view of Native American storytelling. Some of the stories were more violent and creepy than I was expecting and it definitely touched upon sexuality, but many cultures do that in their storytelling and I found it refreshing. If you enjoy mythology and folklore and are searching for something different from the tradition Greek and Brothers Grimm flooding our markets, I would pick this book up and it's really inexpensive if you pick it up used. I don't read books more than once often, but I probably will with this.

Interesting collection, somewhat disconnected
This presents a wide range of collections including those of the creation of heros (prototypes for initiation?), creation myths, heroic stories, and the like. The collection is fairly wide-ranging and includes a lot of material. Most of the stories are short ones (no epics) but it's a good overview of many of the dimensions of Native American myths and legends. The major problem here is that the book lumps all Native American groups together as if they are the same. This leads to a lack of continuity between the stories and a bit of a cultural disconnect. For that I'm removing one star. All in all, though, I learned a lot from this book and found it quite interesting and useful.

Good storytelling but still using antiquated terms
Good book. Needs a updated edit on racist terms, but the stories are well written.

Brilliant
I'm about half-way through and I've laughed greatly. The stories are very weird but very humorous. Glooscap is my favorite hero so far. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mythology.

So many stories
Beautiful book, with plenty of stories. The book is divided into parts, and has a very clear index.Taking one star away as while it is a paperback its a bit lighter quality than I am used to and its a chunky book. However, I will be collecting the set and hope to enjoy them for many years to come.

Entertaining and illuminating if you enjoy ethnology. I had a copy of this edition ...
Lovely book, containing a host of adventures of Coyote, Sun, and other traditional characters. Entertaining and illuminating if you enjoy ethnology. I had a copy of this edition before but gave it away. I chose the same again because the evocative cover art with its drawings of animals and their tracks uses appropriate shades of the desert, sand and cactus, of the American South-West.
