It's a Multisensory Experience!
I bought this book for my 16 month old daughter because she is into "animal sounds" and we both love Maurice Pleger books. It is our first Maurice Pledger sounds book. It think it has become her new favorite (and we have ALOT of books!!!!)The sounds are interesting and pretty realistic for this type of media. The pictures are amazing. If you open and close it slightly the animals move and the sounds keep playing. The whole experience is incredibly lifelike and multisensory. Because my daughter is so young we just turn the pages and name the main animals in the scene and try to copy the sounds ourselves, but I like that she will get more and more out of it as she gets older. This is a wonderful break from "baby books" and will fascinate toddlers as well as older children. It can be discussed as in a simple or complicated way and would help develop vocabulary in children at many different developmental levels. Unlike the touch-and-feel adventures, however, I do not leave this book when she can get it to look at by herself. This book would be easily destroyed by a younger child left unsupervised. Even when she is with me she wants to pull at the pop-ups because she is used to books with flaps that lift, but we get to learn another good concept - "gentle!"I am definately going to collect the other Maurice Pledger "Sounds" books and recommend this one highly!

This whole series is awesome & so realistic!
We first purchased the ocean book & loved it. We then bought the others including this title "Nighttime". Each child has different favorites, but they are all really good quality & very educational. Our favorites are the ocean, night & safari. If you do have younger one's as others have noted the pop-ups are somewhat easy to pull out so be careful; however, the younger one's really enjoy them as well so I would still share them w/ them. I actually kept the pieces they pull out & you can use them in scrapbooking or arts/crafts. So, while they tear them out of the book at least you can find another use for them. The sound can vary a bit from book to book in the series & sometimes can be loud. This can be good/bad depending on your child. As an adult it is really neat to turn each page & have the sounds of the animals/mammals/species sound out at you (depends on which book in the series you buy - for example in the ocean book our favorite page with sound are the whales). If the adults find it enjoyable then the children must love it!!!These books are a very good find - the quality is excellent & there is so much to learn in them & they are fun!Highly recommend.

Wonderful Pop-up with Sounds Book
I initially saw this book while on vacation at a museum store. I bought other books, but did not want to pack this book and risk damage by baggage handlers. When I returned home, I checked Amazon who had a much better price for the book. Imagine my surprise that there were others in the series. This book is well made with sturdy paper pop-ups. Some pop-up books are so delicate, they tear with the first touch. This one not only is quality paper, but the sounds were realistic and fun. I think I'm just a kid at heart and was just fascinated with the book. I "guess" I'll give it to one of my nieces who loves pop up books, with the caveat that she has to share it with me! LOL. I also plan on ordering the Jungle, Birds and Ocean ones so my other nieces and nephews will have their own books.I would highly recommend this particular book. I have no hesitation to buying the other books in the series since I am so impressed with the quality, color, sounds and liveliness of the pop-up books.

GREAT Book, but bad batteries
This is a GREAT book. I actually saw it in a store while hiking through the CO Rocky Mtns. It was so cute. So I looked it up and bought it on Amazon where it was a much better price. Only problem is I got it as a gift, but got it sent to my house. Well, long story short the batteries were old, didn't work. I then had to go trapesing around town to find batteries. P.S. The batteries have a certain code on them, but it's the same type as a 'watch' battery. Staples sells them and Amazon will too probably. So for the price of the book it was great, but having to replace batteries was not so good. Otherwise I would of given it 5 stars.

Unacceptable
This book came to me with no sound. My husband tried several batteries to get the book to work. We did eventually find some to make it work. There were parts of this book that came broken or ripped apart. I k ew the book was used but did not expect to have to repair it before giving it to my son.

Great book!
Needless to say that a lot of supervision is necessary for kids below 5 years old because of the pop-ups that can be easily torn or broken..This book features forest/mountains animals, jungle animals, bats and animals that live in swamp. We have already some Maurice Pledger's books and I still plan to buy more of them. These books are wonderfully illustrated, have sounds matching to the pop-ups, they keep kids attention, they really make the difference. I highly recommend them.

The pictures are fine but the sounds are carelessly produced
I bought this on the back ofย Ocean (Sounds of the Wild) ย which has been a lasting favourite with my grandchildren. They turn the pages with wonder and excitement, it is always out of the book box.So I sent off for 'Night time' which although as beautifully made and attractively designed doesn't quite have the same effect. The sounds are more one dimensional, not so immediately recognisable. The owl doesn't sound like any owl I have heard and the background night time noise of a rural countryside sounds strangely jungle like. The 3d pop out pictures are enchanting, its true, but let down by the sound effects. The pages of information are not relevant to the UK - this was produced in China for the USA publisher, which didn't seem to matter so much with the marine subject. The bats in the belfrey sound like a steam train rather than the high pitched squeaks you'd expect, with a weird watery noise below. The wolves of the Rockies just cry out once then stop with no other accompaniment. I've never heard a warbling bull frog so I'll accept that they may sound as they are recorded, the crocodile is silent. Our grandchildren do admire his rows of nasty sharp teeth, though. The peacock in the jungle is a bit of a wuss, all in all I think the sounds on this occasion are a let down. Ocean (Sounds of the Wild)

An Interesting Book, Rather Than A Story Book. Well Worth The Price.
It is a well presented, colourful book, with pop-ups on some of the pages of creatures that come out at night. On top of this as you turn over each page, it has sound effects, e.g. a wolf howling. There is plenty of information on all the animals, and the different habitats they live in. I bought this as a present for a 7 year old, who was delighted with it. But to be totally honest, I found it interesting and entertaining too! What's good about this book, is that it grows with the child. The younger ones will love the pictures, pop-ups and sounds, and the older ones can read the information on the different animals.

Brilliant fun !
This book is great. One minute you're in the Brazilian jungle and the next you're in a European woodland. Owls, wolves monkeys, etc. etc. We've looked through it so many times and the batteries are still going, but it's great to know they are replacable if they do finally run out. There are other books in this series. I have two others and they are just as good. I plan to get more. Well worth the money.

Dark and atmospheric animal pop-ups
Lovely dark, moody pop-ups.The artwork is realistic and there's information on the animals shown for older readers. My criticism would be that for a UK reader it's not what our nighttime sounds like (tigers? peacocks?). The sounds can also be a little flaky.
