I've been a big fan of Bev Knight since day one and this album is absolutely brilliant. Great covers of some of the most beloved songs written by UK songwriters and performed by UK based acts. Bev has an amazing voice and frankly has the most powerful voice in the UK R&B scene.

Her cover of "Damn" by Lewis Taylor is amazing!

Beverley Knight is a soul queen. If you haven't checked her out you're missing out on of the greatest singers on the scene. On this release she cherry picks some real uk soul gems.a must own for ALL soul lovers.Viva BK.....Viva SOUL!

95年のデビュー作『The B-Funk』は記憶に残る1枚でした。いかにもUKソウルらしいモダンでグルーヴィーなサウンドは今聴いても新鮮。もっとも，彼女の本領が発揮されたのは2ndアルバム以降でしょうか。ソウル，ジャズ，ファンク，リズム＆ブルース，ゴスペルからロックまで実に多彩な音楽性を披露。しかも，何をやっても，そのルックス同様にシャープでスタイリッシュに決めてみせるのだから驚きました。　本作では，ファンキーで小粋，ビターを基調としつつも隠し味はメロウに・・・そんな絶妙のバランス感覚のアップテンポ／ミッドテンポが際立ちます。飄々とステップする「Fairplay」や，分厚いホーンセクションが印象的な「When You Gonna Learn」，クールでミステリアスな「Apparently Nothing」等々。　秀逸は「Mama Used to Say」。メロウでしなやかなグルーヴのアップテンポ。AORと言っても良いぐらい洗練されたナンバーです。明るく爽やかな「Southern Freeez」もいいですね。Michael Jaiとのデュエット「There's Nothing Like This」は，時が止まった楽園でくつろいでいるかのように穏やかなバラード。エンディングは，慈愛に満ちた正統派ゴスペル・バラード「One More Try」。タイトルを聞いてピンと来た人は相当な洋楽通。ジョージ・マイケルのバラードなんですね（『Faith』に収録）。ライブ映像を収めたDVDまで付いていますが，これがまたイイんです。凝った演出は一切なし。音楽一本でパフォーマンスするビヴァリーの姿は，これぞソウル・シンガー。素晴らしいアルバムです。 B Funk Flavour of the Old..B Funk Flavour of the Old..

Not only is this a brilliant CD but the service was quite outstanding. Ordered Sept 16th for delivery Oct 02nd. Actual delivery Sept 20th. Now that is what I call excellent service. As to the content of the CD? Beverley delivers shear class on thirteen very fine British Soul classics. Music is such a very personal thing but for me the standout tracks are Fairplay, There's Nothing Like This, Apparently Nothin' and When You Gonna Learn. You'll just have to make your own mind up but for sure this is nothing short of a brilliant album from one of the best singers around.

Not sure why its taken me so long to review...Saw BK at the Royal Albert hall last Nov with this tour and all i can say she is SUPERB!!a fantastic live performer, her voice is just amazing.Some have criticised that this is only covers - i think its goes to show that BK can perform a massive range and as a soul music fan - the 80's covers are outstanding!a true british talent who i think deserves worldwide success.

I'm 56 and I've enjoyed soul music since about 8 years old so perhaps close to 50 years qualifies me to say that Beverley Knight is pure quality. Some songs on this history of UK soul are better than the originals, those that aren't at least bring something fresh to the party. When I first heard her debut single FOTOS I knew she was something special and this release confirms it beyond all doubt.I rate this as four and three quarter stars rounded up to five !
