Great resource for being of service to your fellow teachers
I was fortunate to be a member of a cohort of mentor teachers from Southeastern New Hampshire who were trained by Kathy Dunne and Susan Villani. After a week working with them, I came away with a better understanding of my role as mentor--that to help my new colleague grow, I needed to be an expert coach, not an expert teacher. I learned to ask questions rather than offer solutions and to assist rather than assess. Most importantly, though, I realized that to be a mentor is to give oneself in the service your fellow teachers, and ultimately, in the service of students. While no book can take the place of the excellent instruction that Kathy and Susan provided, Mentoring New Teachers Through Collaborative Coaching distills the experience, insight, and research of these two excellent coaches into a practical guide for anyone who cares about the growth and development of new teachers. Experienced teachers who have been thrown into the mentoring role with little support from their district will appreciate both the practical tips, such as how to really listen when someone else speaks, as well as the big ideas like the collaborative coaching cycle. Building- and district-level administrators will find in this book a solid foundation upon which large-scale mentoring programs can be built.Whether you are buying this book for yourself or buying it for your district leadership team, Mentoring New Teachers Through Collaborative Coaching has what you need to help achieve, in the words of the authors, "the goals of providing high-quality teachers in all classrooms and ensuring high-quality teaching for every child".
