Excellent Primer, but a Novice Needs an Anatomy Guide and the Web
Pros: I learned a lot from the book, especially about impact forces as potential energy and the effects of shoes. It's not what I thought, and I can now appreciate why my walking improved with minimal footwear, even barefoot on trails. I do the 'short foot' exercise every day now. It helps my feet 'wake up' in the morning and I feel a more stable base for movement.Cons: poor editing and poor binding. It was falling apart half way through reading. No diagrams. A few diagrams upfront would have helped A LOT with understanding the movements she describes and I'm pretty familiar with the terminology. This is particularly true in the discussion of what is your foot type. Read it 3X and still can't picture it. You have to go to the website. While I appreciated the deeper info on her website, a few basic illustrations would have helped a lot. I did not have web access when I was reading it.I tipped to 4 stars because of content, subtracting one for lack of visuals to show the terminology she uses. I did not subtract for editing but you have to wade through the deficits. It is a book for someone with some knowledge of anatomy, movement and technical terminology. Lay people need images and explanations. You must go to her website for that.

Lots of great info
As someone with a lot of foot issues, I can’t wait to start applying some of the exercises in this book. I really appreciate the holistic approach to movement and foot health. There were a lot of little typos that niggled at my English major brain, but the info presented was really solid.

You Wont Get this Help From Your HMO
The author gained my confidence when I found a YouTube video she made about how to do the "short foot' exercise that was spot on. I went to her Youtube listings and found another video for runners that was also good.As a long time runner and someone who worked many years in construction, I had already become pretty familiar with self help protocols for keeping my body moving. This book complimented, or improved on what I knew about the topic. It helped me organize my efforts to (hopefully) get through my current problems. I think it can be very helpful as a guide for future mobility goals as I get older. These outcomes made me glad bought it. I guess the book does have the shortcomings other reviewers have mentioned, editing and lack of diagrams, but it wasn't difficult to glean useful ideas from it. My copy did not fall apart. I didn't use the Internet links suggested, but if those were problematic that isn't good. I don't like the underlying shill factor, from the unnecessarily sexy cover to the product placement bits, but I guess that's how things are done pretty much everywhere today. Still minus 1 or 2.

A Must Read if you have Feet!!
The bottom of our feet have many receptors that pass signals back to the brain giving us an anticipatory response with each step we take. By covering our feet we reduce the ability of these receptors to work at their best. Resulting in a lessened ability to receive information. This results in our body being less anticipatory and more reactionary. This slower reactionary time can result in injuries and chronic pain that could be avoided. The foot, knees, hip, core, back, shoulders and neck are all integrated. Barefoot Strong shows how understanding foot type and applying corrective exercises and massage can help reduce injury and pain through all these areas of the body.Dr Emily Splichal has some easy to understand exercises and massage techniques. She makes the science of the foot easy to understand and introduces us to Short Foot exercise and its benefits. This book is a good read for anyone that has suffered pain associated with movement, has obvious foot issues or wants to understand why being more barefoot may provide health and fitness benefits. After reading this book and using the exercises I feel more connected and have the ability to make minor adjustments to my movement pattern to take away any soreness when it occurs.
