Henry Clay Frick

Robber Baron/Industrialist
Written by a family member who is far removed from Henry but is an interesting attempt at allowing some information on this 19th C. American Industrialist.. Author uses psychology and personality/character traits to define purchases. Hard to know who Henry was in order to understand his presence in the "robber baron" period of buying and collecting and "having". But a good read if one is interested in those men of 19th century America like the Walters, Getty, Hearst, Astor, Carnegie etc.. Getting to know Henry Clay Frick is not part of the book and as 'privacy' was as important as character back in those days, the real Henry Clay Frick cannot be grasped. These men must be seen in the times they were buying and traveling. They were part of an era that that believed their life was not open to the public and the book can give only small openings into who the man was through his purchases.

A Beautiful Presentation
We must take issue with the absurd observation made by the two star "critic". With all due respect, certainly the reviewer is entitled to her opinion. However, such nonsense as is set forth therein should not be taken seriously by anyone who does indeed have a desire to expand one's knowledge of this outstanding man. Why else would one purchase the book? Yakima Washington certainly shines through in this stupid and provincial evaluation. Do not be deterred in the slightest if you wish to possess a really fine work. The illustrations are magnificent, by the way. Altogether, an exceedingly fine worki.

Engaging biography
I found this book fascinating as it covered not only the events that made Frick stand out as a leading industrialist, but also details his painful family life, including the loss of two children, that shaped his thinking and way of life.In addition, this book details Frick's passion for art collecting and goes into vivid detail about the meaning behind some of his purchases as contrasted with his life events.I am looking forward to touring the Clayton home preserved in Pittsburgh in the future.Beautifully written.

Endless Psychobabble
Amazing that this book could get good reviews. The pictures are nice and the business history is interesting, but at least half the book is like two college psychology majors up at night in a dorm room having endless drunken conversation about who did what to whom, and, mostly, why.She also basically accuses Mr. Frick of child abuse, based on a blurry old photo showing him kissing his daughter, with no substantial evidence. In the end, this same daughter, who was in fact the richest woman in America after her father's death, the author refers to as "in fact, penniless". Hardly. The author describers part of her qualification as having gone through years of psychoanalysis, and that certainly shines through.
