In The Ocean (Nature Trails)

Baby loves it
Baby loves to touch and lift flaps.Unlike his other Nature Trail books this one has a main character. A dolphin searching for his family. It's a simple story, the poetry flows well. As the child ages there will be more in the art for her to look for as we read. These Nature Trail books are baby favorites.

So good I bought it twice
I originally bought this for my daughter when she was about a year old. She loved it!!! In fact she read it and reread it so much that I had to throw it out about a year ago because it was so worn. I just recently bought it again (she is now 3 1/2) and she still loves it.This is a great book for toddlers. It has bright vivid pictures and a nice story.

Loved it!
The pictures are beautiful and the touch and feel aspect keeps my toddler very interested. He also liked the flaps that reveal hidden pictures. I am going to buy more from the same author!

My baby loves these books!
We have three of these books. The other two we have are "In the Rain Forest", and "In the Forest". The rain forest and forest ones are her favorite and she isn't even one year old yet. The only reason I gave this one 4 stars is because it doesn't seem to grasp her attention as much as her two other books. I think becuase the pictures in the other two are more lively and there is more variety in color and texture. I give a lot of credit to these books because they are the only things that can keep her still for a long period of time. They have been life savers on airplane rides. I believe they have also encouraged her early love of books.

Unique series of books, my daughter loves them!
My young daughter has the entire series of Pledger's touch and feel nature trail books and adores them all! They capture her imagination and she's immediately drawn into the beautiful illustrations and flaps. So far, this particular book about the ocean has been her favorite.I'm impressed by the variety of animals that are included in each book and like this series goes beyond identifying commonly known animals and also identifies animals she may have never heard of before. Sometimes it can be a struggle to have her sit still and focused long enough to finish other books, but not with these! She listens attentively until I'm done reading, points to animals in the book, and often wants to "read" the book on her own.Great series of books! Well worth the price paid!

This is a fantastic book!
What a GORGEOUS book! "Little silver dolphin" is lost; join him on an underwater journey of discovery as he searches for his family. This book is instantly engaging mostly due to the tactile treasures and OUTSTANDING illustrations, but the prose is pleasing and educational too. "The tiny, SHINY flying fish go swimming through the air. Now lift the flap and you will see what else is leaping there." The reader lifts the flap, "A sailfish with fins of BLUE. And Mother Dolphin's somewhere too!" In smaller print, the author includes lessons on numbers and counting, "How many flying fish can you count?" and "Can you find the mother dolphin?"This is a "touch and feel" book with lessons on marine life, colors, numbers and counting. The images, beautifully rendered, are beset with pattern and fine details, not to mention the union between the "touch and feel" items and the illustrations on the "half-page flaps" are exceptional. Additional textures include: FURRY sea otter, SCALY shinny fish, PRICKLY pink coral, LUMPY lobster shell, NEON darting fish, SMOOTH skinned shark, and SOFT silver dolphin. Recommended for 4 to 8 years old, but my 1 year old adores this book and finds the textures and images irresistible. "In the Ocean," is a fantastic book!

Outstanding book!
My son recieved this book as a gift and he simply loves it! He's not quite 2 and he knows all the fish in the book and has even made up a few (he insists the spotted fish is a "giraffe" fish!). But - the real proof of the learning value of his book happened just yesterday. We were at the Nature Center, and they have a salt-water tank. As soon as he saw it he raced to it, pointing, excited and telling me, "Mama! A lionfish! A lionfish!" And sure enough - there was a "stripy-spiky lionfish", just like in the book! I couldn't believe at his age that he could make the connection between the picture in the book and the real thing, but he did! Obviously, this book has real educational value. I recommend it to ALL parents! And I'm here to buy a few other "Nature Trail" books today...

outstanding book
My daughter received this book when she was 19 months old and it immediately became a favorite--an incredible compliment considering all she does is read books. The illustrations are vibrant and incredibly stimulating--something to find on every inch of each page. 5 months after receiving the book my daughter still adores it. She now knows the name of every creature in the book, down to the nautilus, neons, and sea slug. This book has definitely spawned a love of the ocean in her. And the format of the book, with its different textures that morph from one subject to another with the lifting of a flap is brilliant. We'll be buying every book by Maurice Pledger!

what a great book
...to teach about the ocean in English classes in German Kindergarten. The book is perfect to talk about the most famous animals in the ocean. Especially through the touching areas, it is lots of fun. The kids also love the story about the dolphin who is looking for his family. With the help of a ocean memory and the rainbow fish story, my German kids know the English world of the ocean.
