My final DVD [in the Dovedale series] is called “HULL FISH DOCK: One Big Family”. It tells the story of the workers on St.Andrew's Fish Dock - in their own words. I enjoyed interviewing those who landed the fish on the Wet (North) Side and then got the trawlers ready for sea again on the Dry (South) Side - all within three days. They relate tales about the bobbers, merchants, barrow lads, tugmen, engineers, owners, shore gangs, secretaries, police, fiddles, jokes, and the awful, ever-lingering smell from Hull Fish Meal! But they all recall how it was like 'One Big Family'. My documentary is a social history of a unique breed of people who once worked on the dynamic HULL FISH DOCK. Thanks to Adrian Thompson (cover painting), Alan Day (concluding poem) and Great Britain rugby star Johnny Whiteley for his memories of when he was a fish filleter on dock in the Bitter Winter of 1947.

Brilliant, just brilliant.
I bought the whole series of these DVDs and am really pleased that I did, they represent excellent value for money and are a great insight in to the lives of the Hull trawler men, their families and the industry in which they worked. I initially bought them for research purposes but I was thrilled to see they are much more than this. These films are to be viewed and loved by all. The wonderful characters you meet and the tales they tell are just brilliant. Dr. Alec Gill, you have done an amazing job and I applaud you.I recently discovered Dr. A. Gill had also written the title below. It is an outstanding read. My partner was a deep water fisherman and, although he did not sail from Hull, he held many of the beliefs documented - brought back special memories. Thank you. A FISH OUT OF WATER
The production values did not make this purchase suitable for my intention of showing it to a room full of people. It would be of use for someone doing individual research into the subject.

Hull Fish Dock - One Big Family
I wanted to see more trawlers, but the accounts from the people interviewed was of great interest. Another addition to my collection of a once proud industry.

Brilliant, people from Hull should buy this. You could spot a distant relative.
Love to watch this, especially as we can see the dock after regeneration.
