Q: How hard do i have to beat the devil out of the brush on this?

That depends did u really work the paint into the bristles? Did u let the canvas take what it wants? Were u a mud mixer before u applied paint to the canvas? Are u using odorless paint thinner with a beater rack? If u can answer yes to all of these I would imagine u have to beat it hard enough to cover the camera crew.

Q: If I don't buy the cleaning bucket, what is the right size container for the hole on the shelf?

The diameter of the hole is 5.75 inches. I have the bucket and the nice feature is that it has a lip that prevents it from falling through the hole and it is very sturdy plastic. One other bucket I use is from the 5lb tub of Nestle Toll House cookie dough. It is food grade plastic so thinner won't eat through it, the lid fits very tight and the diameter on the bucket bottom is small enough to fit through the hole up to about three-quarters of the bucket which is then wider than the hole; roughly 6 inches in diameter. The reason I use to buckets is just let one settle prior to cleaning. This way I can keep painting.

Q: Would this work as a "lap" easel?

No! I sent mine back. The the easel had some poor welding done on it. Places where the welds had cold lap. (No bond) The appearance was sub par as well. For the price I expected better

Q: Will this accommodate a canvas that is 36" tall?

The vertical limit if the rack is around 28" If you wanted to go bigger you would have to modify it. It could be done though.
